There are cycles in the Universe when great evil threatens all life in the Universe. The Ultimate weapon against evil, devised long ago, is called "The Fifth Element", stored on Earth for safekeeping. When a Professor discovered it in the 1910's, he found it very astonishing. However, a group of beings known as the Monascheiwans came to Earth to take the fifth element to utilize it for their own well-being, promising to return it in time for the next cycle. In the distant future of the 2200's, the Earth is a very different place, yet much the same... People smoke, break laws, make messes. In the megalopolis of New York, a former elite commando named Korban Dallas is now a taxi driver. As the Monascheiwans were returning the Fifth Element to Earth to fend of the rising evil, they are destroyed by a ruthless race of beings known as Mangalores. Discovered in the remains of the Monascheiwans' ship, is a remnant of the Fifth Element, from which they re-create "the perfect being", The Fifth Element, named "Leeloo", who drops in on Korban Dallas in his cab... literally. Dallas keeps her free from government control and brings her to a priest named Vito Cornillius, who, seeing the coming Evil in the prophecies, is attempting to find the Elemental Stones needed to power the Fifth Element. He is getting in the way of a ruthless businessman named Zorg, who is already operating under the sway of Evil.
In the twenty-third century, the universe is threatened by evil. The only hope for mankind is the Fifth Element, who comes to Earth every five thousand years to protect the humans with four stones of the four elements: fire, water, Earth and air. A Mondoshawan spacecraft is bringing The Fifth Element back to Earth but it is destroyed by the evil Mangalores. However, a team of scientists use the DNA of the remains of the Fifth Element to rebuild the perfect being called Leeloo. She escapes from the laboratory and stumbles upon the taxi driver and former elite commando Major Korben Dallas that helps her to escape from the police. Leeloo tells him that she must meet Father Vito Cornelius to accomplish her mission. Meanwhile, the Evil uses the greedy and cruel Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg and a team of mercenary Mangalores to retrieve the stones and avoid the protection of Leeloo. But the skilled Korben Dallas has fallen in love with Leeloo and decides to help her to retrieve the stones.
Excellent film, humor, action, well acted and well made. Why some people rate it less than 8/10 is beyond me. The film is just plain fun, it doesn't pretend to be more. Only because it loses a little bit grip in the last 30 minutes I rate it 9/10 instead of 10/10.

The Fifth Element story is your basic good vs. evil theme. Every five thousand years a Great Evil appears with the sole purpose to destroy all life. The film opens on an excavation site in Egypt in 1914, a group of aliens called the Mondoshawans arrive to take the only weapon that can defeat the Great Evil the fifth element, due to the upcoming wars on Earth. The fifth element and four stones work together to create the weapon of organic life that can defeat the Great Evil. They leave a key with a priest for him to protect and pass down to each following generation and prepare them for the return of the Great Evil.
In the year 2263 the Great Evil finally appears before Earth to try and destroy all life. There is a quick interaction with a battleship that introduces you to the power the Great Evil has. The next scene is when the view is introduced to Leeloo. In a Mondoshawans ship headed for earth the ship is attached by a group of outlawed shape shifting Mangalore's. The Mondoshawans ship crashes, but earth's scientists who are able to recover a portion of the fifth element and us a device to recreate it. There you seen the form of the fifth element start to take shape and you realize it is a human women and her name is Leeloo. Leeloo the perfect being is escapes the lab with a daring jump off the side of a building and falls into Korban Dalles taxi.
Korban Dalles is a retired high ranking military man, who is now a divorced cab drive. When Leeloo falls into Korban's taxi he initially tries to comply with the officers who are chasing Leeloo, but gives into her pleads and a out of control fling car chase takes place where Korban Dalles outruns the law so he is able to deliver Leeloo to the Priest Vito Cornelius to help search for the four stones.
From there a the crazy adventure begins, with Korban Dalles and Leeloo, with Priest Vito Cornelius in tow to search for the four stones before the Great Evil reaches Earth. The trio end up on a cruise in Fhloston Paradise to meet up with the Diva Plavalaguna who is the protector of the stones. In comes Ruby Rhod who is a outrageous radio talk show host with an explosive sexual personality. As Ruby Rhod and Korban are watch the performance of the Diva, the Mangalore's attack and kill the Diva's entourage in search of the stones to deliver back to Zorg. Zorg in turn is in turn working with the Great Evil to eliminate the only weapon that can defeat it. This is the first scene where you see the power of Leeloo the Supreme Being. With the back drop of the Diva's opera performance Leeloo enters into a raging battle with the group of Mangalore's who killed the Diva's entourage. The battle spills into the rest of the ship, where the Mangalore's try to take the ship hostage, and a bomb is set. Korban Dalles, with the help of Ruby Rhod and Cornelius wage war against the Mangalores on the ship. The battle extreme by any movie standards, but fits perfectly within the movies theme, and succeeds at elaborating the good vs. evil plot. Then a bomb is detected by the ship and there is a hilarious colorful exodus of the ship by all the passengers. With Korban rescuing Leeloo and the group departing seconds before the ship explodes.
Now on their way to Egypt to activate the weapon, Leeloo learns of the ugly past of the war with the last 300 or so years of pain and suffering the human race has inflicted on one another. She loose her faith in humanity and her will to live. Once arriving in Egypt Korban, Ruby, and Cornelius frantically figure out how to activate the stones, once activated Korban places Leeloo in the center. However, the weapon has yet to activate. Korban pleads with Leeloo telling her there is much to live for, and finally confesses his love for her, which reestablishes her faith and the ultimate weapon activates and destroys the Great Evil seconds before it consumes all life on Earth.
The Fifth Element is a fast pace action pack film. It's the perfect movie to watch without much thought involved. It's entertaining, and provides a number of moments where the views will be on the edge of their seat or laughing at the oddities happening with in the film.
The movie unreels like a depressive in a manic phase, a frenzy of lightning-fast cuts, cuts, cuts.
Former Special Forces Major Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), currently working as a taxicab driver in the 23rd century, is more than surprised when an orange-haired woman calling herself Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) suddenly falls into his cab. Engineered to be "perfect", Leeloo is actually a divine creature placed on Earth to deflect "the Great Evil", an interdimensional weapon that comes to Earth every 5,000 years with the sole purpose of destroying all life in the Universe. Korben and Leeloo, together with Father Vito Cornelius (Ian Holm) and interstellar radio personality Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker), must retrieve four elemental stones in order to trigger the fifth element that will defeat the Great Evil. However, ruthless businessman Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and his team of mercenary Mangalores are also searching for the stones, and they will stop at nothing to get them. The Fifth Element is based on a screenplay written by French film director Luc Besson and American screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen. However, the film was subsequently novelized as The Fifth Element: A Novel (1997) by Terry Bissen. Right before the leader of the Mondoshawan opens the secret chamber in the temple he says that "...war is coming, stones not safe on Earth anymore." He probably means that, given the year of 1914, that the Great War might spread to the region where the temple stands and the secret chamber and the stones could be discovered. Additionally, World War II is in the future, barely 20 years hence, when Nazi Germany would seek to seize control of Northern Africa, as would Fascist Italy, whereby the temple could be destroyed during that time as well. Near the end of the movie, Leeloo sees images of humanity's dark side, as well as its capacity for destruction, which puts her in a state of near-apathy. Korben thus has to convince her that love is humanity's redeeming value. The Diva may have already noticed that Leeloo is special to Korben, and that he may be her strongest connection to mankind. Therefore, she convinces him to profess his love for Leeloo, so as to trigger her into action once the four elemental stones are arranged. No one was credited for these roles, and there's no clear evidence as to who was used. However, some have speculated that it was Jill Mullan, who is credited under Other Crew for "special thanks". Others have suggested that Finger sounds like Bill Nunn or Vin Diesel but neither of these have been confirmed. As President Lindberg (Tommy 'Tiny' Lister) anxiously watches the fireball of Great Evil approach Earth, Dallas, Fr Cornelius, David (Charlie Creed-Miles), and Ruby Rhod attempt to fit the four stones into their slots in the weapon chamber at the Egyptian temple. Realizing that each stone represents a classical element (earth, wind, water, and fire), they match the stones to their slots but nothing happens. When David accidentally exhales on the Wind stone, however, it begins to activate. They dust the Earth stone with soil, and it, too, activates. Cornelius squeezes the sweat from his handkerchief on the Water stone, and Dallas lights his last match to activate the Fire Stone. Dallas then tells Leeloo that it's time for her to do her thing, but Leeloo is too bummed out and emotionally disillusioned after watching the War videos. Dallas tries to convince her that there are things about humans worth preserving, such as love. 'I love you,' Dallas says and kisses Leeloo. Suddenly, the stones power up and Leeloo releases the Divine Light, extinguishing the fireball and turning into another moon in Earth's orbit. After their ordeal, Dallas and Leeloo are placed in a recuperation tank. In the final scene, the President comes to thank them, but Dallas and Leeloo are otherwise engaged.
