Venus is a hard-working high school senior, focused, with drive and a pending scholarship at CalArts, the esteemed art school in California, that would help her spread her wings and leave Staten Island, her homeplace. Diffident enough and constantly in the shadow of her popular friend Sydney, Venus will be enticed by the notoriously hardcore reality online game "Nerve", and accept to become, for once in her life, a "player" instead of a mere "watcher". However, Venus is definitely not an adrenaline junkie, so by leaving her comfort zone, she will be gradually lured into an ongoing wave of incrementally difficult assignments, all contrived by the "watchers'" hungry appetite for thrills and excitement. When Venus accepts to kiss Ian, a random guy who turns out to be another "Nerve" player, the "watchers" will not be able to get enough of the couple, demanding to team up against an all-night, white-knuckle truth or dare adventure all over town. Inevitably, as the game insidiously claims Vee's personal life and friends, she will have to face one relentless dilemma: how far is she willing to go to win back her life?
'Nerve' is about an online dare game, in which people give participants anonymous dares for money. The participants compete with each other to win the grand prize as the dares get tougher. Things get worse when the tasks get increasingly dangerous and lives are at stake.
Nerve succeeds in blending modern technology into present day storytelling. It delivers on suspense and is reflective of the problems of today as seen in live streaming tragedies that appear in our news all to often. The characters are exciting and enjoyable and are faced with life or death conflict. This is an high anxiety driven thrilling movie with a plot that does not seem so far fetched in our social media driven present day existence.
I am not one of those people who ever write a review. Seriously, I'm not.
But JES*S!
I literally started this book 3 days ago. I read the sample in the iTunes Store and was hooked. I am still only about 55 pages in.
Yet, I STILL had to turn this off in the first 20 minutes. If you haven't read the book, ignore this. (Plus, it has Emma Roberts- it's redeeming quality.)
But the beginning of this movie alone is so ridiculously and horribly different from the book, that in only 20 minutes, it's not even worth my time.
Blisteringly cool one moment and ridiculously silly the next (much like its high school heroine), this punchy and propulsive late summer surprise is able to capture the way we live now because it displays such a vivid understanding of the reasons why we live that way.
