When a man (Robbins) believes he has discovered that his wife is having an affair with his boss, it sets off a chain reaction of events. First he wanders into a ghetto where a robber (Lawrence) tries to take his money at gunpoint, but instead sets a wild ride from California to Arizona. The two eventually become reluctant friends. Discussing robbery techniques, they decide to get back at the boss by robbing an office safe containing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Life is further complicated by another pair of robbers who chase the first two for infringing on their territory. Nothing with Tim Robbins in it is ever that bad, and with this in mind, I watched Nothing to Lose. I only saw it two hours ago and my memory of it is already starting to dwindle, this is unusual as usually I remember films in all their detail months if not years after seeing them. This just proves how superficial and light weight this comedy is, OR I'm losing my short term memory at an alarming rate. There are good things about this film and there are bad things. One good thing is that its short, light and fluffy and relatively entertaining. The bad thing is its stereotypical, unoriginal - just how many buddy films can we see? and only some of the jokes/laughs work. A lot of the time you can see why the writers thought a scene would be funny, and why certain situations would work but the problem is that most of the scenes just are not funny at all- but I'm sure some people will disagree, depending on your taste in humour. Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence work well together, but there is no chemistry between them. They don't live up to the standard of Gibson/Glover, Chan/Tucker or Gooding/Cruise where the energy just bounced off one another. The twist in the plot was good although perhaps a little contrived, and the ending you could see coming a mile away. But this film rates higher than it should because of the appearance of Tim Robbins, without him though, this film would have been a dead loss. I went to a flea market in sEARch for cheap movies on VHS or DVD. I came across Nothing to Lose and my jaw dropped because it was only $4. So I picked up my jaw, handed the lady my 4 bucks and I watched it again and laughed as if it was my first time. But it wasn't my first, I've seen this movie on multiple rentings in the previous yEARs... and I'm glad to now own it.

My current movie collection is mostly movies that have made me cry (Yeah I have (rarely) cried at movies and I'm a guy. So what?! I played college football and managed to have a 4.0 GPA during >=i.. ) So my collection consist of movies that have been strong enough to move me to tEARs (and to keep some macho-ness in me, I will say that it takes a lot to do so)... and even though Nothing to Lose doesn't really fit with the Schindler's Lists and the Shawshank Redemptions... it did make me cry.

And those tEARs come from laughing so hard at Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence from lines like "...don't kill me Freaky Jason. I said, please don't kill me freaky jason...," and the unknown ebonic line, "There's a spider on your head," with the memorable event following that line were some of the many priceless big laughs. Some jokes might not work (I guess we should call you the "step king"), but it just reminds me how hard they are working for the laughs... and they succeed more often than not.

The plot itself is rather simple and I suppose it's predictable as many of the critiques have pointed out the known ending (I hate it when they do that) and the other "usuals." But in my opinion, outside of the laughs there is a welcomed little bit of hEARt in the story. It comes from T. Paul's (Lawrence) difficulties in finding a job and having to resolve to robbing stores and people. I thought it was a nice touch when Des'ree's song "Crazy Maze" came into play nEAR the ending of the movie: "Money don't make the world go round...." But ... for 4 bucks, I discovered a way for it to make the world a little brighter as well as temporarily blurry. a5c7b9f00b
