In the future, after the Third World War, the world is ruled by a totalitarian and fascist society with the leadership of 'The Father'. Arts, music, books, luxury and feelings are not acceptable, and persons uses a drug called 'Prozium' in a daily basis to repress their feelings and feel happy. The opponents to this new world are called offenders and they form the underground resistance to the system, who are destroyed by very-well trained and powerful agents called 'The Clericks'. John Preston is one of this agents, and his life changes when he misses his daily dose of 'Prozium'. In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Bale) is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it. This movie is definitely a hidden gem. This is honestly the best movie I've seen in some time. I'm not a fan of Christian Bale but I admired him in this movie. The story was excellent, it actually reminded me of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" with respects to emotions being man's weakness, and even though this preceded "V for Vendetta" that also came to mind.

The action absolutely deserves mention. The action in this movie was different than anything I've seen before. The clerics, or whatever they were called, mastered gun use and made it almost artistic. Their coordinated shooting along with their elusive movements made them optimal killing vessels. They made killing beautiful.

This movie made me think about what could occur in the future and it brought forth conversation. This movie is not incredibly unique, it really is a "fight the power/the people v. the government" type movie which you can see in other movies or books (e.g. 1984, The Matrix, Logan's Run, et al). Equilibrium puts its own unique spin on the premise of the "government knows best" and it works remarkably. This "review" most likely contains a "spoiler". Of course, to me a spoiler is virtually any trailer that contains more than the name of the film and the major cast members. As far as I'm concerned, most trailers now available show too much. That being said, here's what I think of this film.

I just purchased the DVD of this film and was not sure about it's premise. To think that there may be drugs powerful enough to suppress ALL emotions in a human being is TRULY SCARY. THAT is the major "suspension of disbelief" required to enjoy this movie.

The premise of Preston being able to participate, without feeling, in the death of his wife - and the mother of his children - is a bit hard to get past. If there are no emotions, how and why does one GET married and have children? Does one even CARE about his/her children? What is caring? If you can get through that, you'll find a film that will keep you VERY involved. While not "fleshing out" ALL of the major characters, the filmmakers of this one have given us a protagonist in Preston whom we grow to find is not only a truly scary killing machine (who is really "cooler" than Neo of "Matrix" fame - he doesn't need "virtual enhancements" to make his abilities awesome, it's just extensive training), but a character who comes to understand there's something wrong with the "system". Sean Bean (Boromir in "Lord of the Rings") has a short, but significant part early in the story that causes our hero (Christian Bale, now probably the definitive "Batman", as Preston) to question his job, which usually involves the virtually indiscriminate killing of lots of people - in the name of "no more murder or war".

While our main character is developed well enough that we can care about what happens to him, film time developing those who form his opinion of the necessary changes is rather short. There are not as many action scenes as "The Matrix", and probably not necessarily as "flashy" (though definitely fast, furious, and satisfying), but there is one major thing this film has that I found lacking in "The Matrix" - a clear motive, reason, and story brought to a conclusion! After watching this film, I felt moved to check out what others had felt about it and was pleased to find that most seemed to feel it was underrated. I liked the picture very much and thought that, overall, it was very well done, the actors were believable - if not excellent - the story was generally very straightforward (not confusing, convoluted, or having esoteric religious references) about the values and consequences of just being human and having emotions - and realizing that without emotion, we're not "human".

I probably overrate films, but I DID really like this one. I definitely do not regret the purchase and know I will watch it many times again, probably catching something I missed in previous viewings. It's a keeper! Mostly plays like a routine thriller with a classy cast. A simple explanation could be:

Preston was driven and watched from the very beginning by Dupont to stop the dose and start feeling so he can gain the trust of the resistance and lead to them as Dupont tells him at the end. With or without the gun swap, he would not have been arrested before delivering the resistance.

Another theory is:

When Brandt takes Preston before Dupont (after Preston is seen crying because he was unable to stop Mary's execution), it is revealed that Brandt's weapons, not Preston's, were the ones used to kill the sweeper team in the Nethers. When Brandt thinks about this, he realizes that Preston must have switched guns with him, and we flashback to the scene in the industrial section of the Nethers, where Brandt offers Preston his gun to kill the sense offenders lined up against the wall. Since this sequence occurs after Preston massacres the sweepers to save the dog, people assume this is a major plot hole, and it is, but it was not intended to be.

In the original script, the following is written: And he flashes back:

TO HIS CAR: The house in the zone burning in the background.

BRANDT: Who will be left to watch...

A beat. Then Preston hands Brandt his gun. It should be noted that excerpt has been taken from an early version of the script (the version in which Mary lives), but the idea is the same: the switch actually took place right before the first time Preston saves the dog from being killed. We actually see Preston hand a gun that was laying on the hood of the car to Brandt before the dog execution scene (although not Brandt handing a gun to Preston), which is never alluded to in the accusations scene.

Further to previous answers, there are scenes and shots missing from the final cut of Equilibrium that would have explained the "gun swap" clearly. Unfortunately, they were left out for any number of reasons such as noticeable camera shake, bad lighting/framing, lack of time/money etc. The "gun swap" plot point does actually work but now needs a little clarification. The tracking system used by Dupont's aid does not work by identifying a gun's specific location but by locating the specific gun that any Cleric is carrying at a given time. Within the the context of the film, the gun swap can be explained as follows:

1. Preston kills the sweeper team in the Nethers with his own gun.

2. Later, when Brandt asks Preston to kill the assembled line of sense offenders, Preston hesitates and Brandt offers him his own gun. Taking it, Preston, (sensing an opportunity) swaps it with his own gun, giving Brandt the gun he used to kill the sweeper team.

3. Later, when Brandt has brought Preston before Dupont, the gun that killed the sweepers is located on or about Brandt's person. Pulling the gun from his pocket and reading the serial code stamped on the bottom, Brandt realises that Preston has swapped the guns. Admitting this to Dupont, Preston interrupts by saying that the only reason Brandt has his gun is because Brandt took it from him when he arrested him. This alleviates Brandt's possession of Preston's gun by making it sound like it was Brandt who killed the sweeper team with his own gun. Unfortunately, Dupont never uses the tracking system to try and locate Brandt's gun, which is actually in Preston's possession and would therefore discredit Preston's explanation.

4. However, Dupont isn't so easily duped as he is shown in his private anteroom at the climax of the film with Brandt next to him, leaning on the desk. This implies that Dupont had allowed Brandt to explain himself and then used the tracking system to locate Brandt's gun on Preston or that it was all part of a master plan and he was just playing along with Preston. It is now up to the viewer to decide which piece of exposition they like the most.

5. Finally, all of this is somewhat moot, given that during the murder scene in the Nethers, Preston is using two guns to kill the guards. At no time do you see Preston handing more than one gun to Brandt. Preston hands Brandt a gun just before the sweeper team starts killing the dogs, and then he swaps a gun with him during the raid scene after the murders in the Nether have taken place. Assuming that the switch did take place between these two times, only one gun would have exchanged hands. When you factor this in, it becomes more than just a plot hole and branches into the realm of film goof. It shows that the regime is rotten to the core and all about power rather than preventing violent emotions, Dupont's office is filled with illicit art, decoration etc and he quotes poetry to Preston in their final confrontation. Dupont (and by implication Brandt and the inner circle) is a hypocrite who breaks the society's own rules by committing 'sense' crime, whilst executing others for doing the same. Preston may suspect this all along as he notes Dupont's anger in a society where it is forbidden and his sliding his hand across the table in much the same way as Preston enjoys the sensation of running his hand along the handrail at the train station. Finally, Dupont states to Preston, "I'm life, I live, I breathe...I feel!" a5c7b9f00b
