Computer hacker Kevin Flynn is a former employee of the software corporation ENCOM, now running an arcade. Flynn has been trying to find proof that five video games he created were stolen by ENCOM's senior executive Ed Dillinger. In response, he is split into molecules by a digital laser and transported into ENCOM's computer. In this computer, a megalomaniacal program called Master Control dominates the digital world like a dictator. Flynn who programmed a number of features of the environment he got into, teams up with a bookkeeping program and his girlfriend, and together they try to replace Master Control with Tron. Tron is a heroic security program who monitors communications between the Master Control Program and the real world.
Kevin Flynn is a former employee of the software corporation ENCOM, now running an arcade. Flynn has been trying to hack into ENCOM's mainframe computer to find evidence that ENCOM's senior executive Ed Dillinger stole five video games he created. But Dillinger's supercomputer Master Control Program foils Flynn's efforts and dictates and controls most of the computer systems. One night, Flynn's former girlfriend Lora Baines and her boyfriend, ace computer programmer Alan Bradley helps Flynn break into ENCOM to shut down the MCP with Alan's security program Tron. But MCP uses Lora's matter transmission program and converts Flynn into data and sends him into the computer. Flynn finds himself in a electronic world ruled by the MCP and his evil chief henchman Sark, where computer programs are the alter-egos of their creators and are forced to compete in gladiatorial games. With help from Tron, a heroic and fearless security program and his lover, Yori, Flynn sets out destroy the MCP and help Tron liberate the system from the MCP's control, by destroying the MCP is Flynn's only way of returning to the real world.
I got to see this movie for the first time recently.
And it's a cool movie. Tron is taken place during the early 80s involving this highly advance computer company that hold the smartest computer of it's time. The Master Control Encom, able to detect software pirates, and has the power to run other computers throughout the country.
A new device is made at that company that's able to digitalized objects into a computer.
A computer expert named Kevin Flynn has be digitalized into the company's computer.
And a computer word is different from the real world. Video Games are a survival of life, love isn't a common thing there, and escaping from this computer world is merely impossible.
Kevin Flynn must find a way to defeat the Master Control, and find a way home with the help of Tron a program that's able to defend and fight off evil.
It's a unique flick. I recommend it to those who like movies that have early done CGI that's different from today's standards.
Our culture has lost and gained something when you go to the arcade and don't find "button-smasher" games anymore. Now it's all about "full-body involvement" with DDR, shooting arcades, racing, and anything else. No escape for the side-scrollers now.
This is your only spoiler warning...
I found an interesting parallel in 'Hulk.' the concept is a sophisticated everyman turning into a crude monster. The parallel being Eric Bana, a crude and unsophisticated actor, turns into a sophisticated CGI construction. Thus, the means to the ends often contradict the initial concept.
With 'Tron', we have a more intelligent actor (Bridges) playing games with Disney's writers while playing a hacker and game program simultaneously. Bridges knows the whole material is juvenile hogwash, so he plays against it. If he did that for 'Seabiscuit', I would have given him more credit.
This movie personified the Phase II thinking from Disney. After the disastrous 'Black Hole', they poured millions into trying to innovate on new genres. The live-action efforts resulting from this thinking are still interesting even as Disney degenerated to Phase III (Little Mermaid and its spawn) and finally Phase IV (Pixar). Here was some serious attempts at storytelling with all the financial power that Disney had.
Since the plot is baloney, a simple variation of the Disney "sport" film, we can only examine 'Tron' on its remaining quality: the computer environment. In these Pixar days it seems contrived, but I actually found it the most interesting part of the movie. Notice the devoted attempt at making a 100% synthetic environment...something George Lucas has been trying to do for years.
In many ways, 'Tron' represents the post-modern art world. Often simple, rarely understood, and yet amazingly visual. Occasionally, it degenerates into album cover art work and that's where the biggest flaws lie. Thankfully the 80s retro sound effects make up for this gap.
Looking back from today, it's 'Star Wars' meets 'Alice' meets 'Mighty Ducks'. For historical value in its images only.
Final Analysis = = Cinematic Dud
The best visual design in the world doesn't mean a thing unless there's someone around with a rudimentary sense of story. Jeff Bridges, playing the human hero sucked into the machine, has to carry the film's entire burden of charm and appeal; he seems to have freaked out under the strain, turning in some surpassingly weird, alienating work.
