The Joker is back with a vengeance, and Gotham's newest Dark Knight needs answers as he stands alone to face Gotham's most infamous Clown Prince of Crime.
This movie inspired by the animated series, BATMAN BEYOND, finds Batman facing his greatest adversary The Joker, only problem is that the original Batman, Bruce Wayne already took care of him years ago. So the new Batman, Terry McGinnis has to find out how is this possible and to do that he has to find out what happened only problem is that Bruce doesn't want to talk about it.
Back in 1999, Warner Bros. Animation aired another Batman show called, "Batman Beyond". It aired from 1999 to 2001 and became a hit. What's different about, "Batman Beyond", is that it's taken place in a futuristic version of Gotham City where a teenager becomes the new Batman.
In 2000, Warner Bros. released a direct-to-video movie called, "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker". It follows the story about The Joker making a return and start's to terrorize Gotham City again. Now, it's up to Terry McGinnis (A.K.A. Batman) to stop The Joker.
The film has some great animation, it had some cool scene's like the flashback scene where Robin get's turned into a, "Mini-Joker", and the scene where The Joker is launching his laser beam Satellite at Gotham City, I also liked the voice work from Kevin Conroy returning as Bruce Wayne and Mark Hamil returning as The Joker.
If you like the comic-book series or, "Batman Beyond", you will definitely like, "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker".
By far the best of the animated Batman features, and even puts both the animated series to shame, with its complexity and depth of story. I have had the unique opportunity to see the unedited version as well as the final dvd release; and while the cuts/changes made for the release do, sort of, diminish the emotional impact, I fully understand why they were made. Kudos to the entire staff, as well as the composer, who managed to carry on Shirley Walker's excellent work on the music for both series and the features.
"Batman Beyond" takes place about 40 years after the "New Batman Adventures" series. At the time of the show's release a precise date was given as 2039. Meaning Bruce Wayne quit being Batman in 2019 (as seen in ''Rebirth''). This also means the episode, ''Epilogue'' takes place in the year 2056. Terry McGinnis himself has a given birth-date of 2023.
Due to a political uproar against violence in animated movies at that time Warner Bros. canceled the release and edited the movie to a version that was then released worldwide. In the beginning of 2001 the original and uncensored version was released in the USA, on top of that in Anamorphic Widescreen while earlier releases had been only presented in Fullscreen. a5c7b9f00b
