Over the years, Bioware has climbed the ranks and become the best storytellers in video gaming. But with all its games, there is always a flaw. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic had a bad fighting system, but great story. Jade Empire was too short, with a great story. And now Mass Effect has no large flaws, with a great story. It seems they have finally created the nearly perfect game.
With a story the reels you in, enemies that you WANT to blow up, and dialog that feels like a movie, Mass Effect is one of the greatest games ever made.
As you play as Commander Sheopard, a war-torn hero who's fate you decide, you are joined by different races and characters that you grow to love (especially Urdnot Wrex). When you can't save Wrex the first time around, I was heartbroken.
Commander Sheopard was voted the third best hero in gaming this year by Game Informer magazine simply because you can be a bad ass commando or a heroic and gallant soldier.
Simply the best game all year.
Pretty much like Dirge of Cerberus - FF7, this is a cut scene looking for a game. I can appreciate they went to a lot of creative trouble making a video game into "Choose your own adventure" book. However I can't sit idle and view 10 minutes of dialog then kill 5 or 6 bad guys and watch another cut scene. That is exactly what Mass Effect does.
Cuts work best at the end of chapters as they did in games like "Halo" or "Fable" not every step of the way. Also the custom character creator lacks depth in the fact you are allowed to change sex, face, birthplace, etc.. I still found the selection pointless to the story and limited.
When you are asked for input a dialog box pops up and they couldn't be more obtuse. For example; you could select something that says, "You are the biggest jerk I ever met!". Yet the game audio responds with, "I disagree with your opinion Sir, but will take it under advisement.". Leaving you feel like you have even less control over character and looking at the screen blankly.
I played the PC version of this game so I never encountered an interface or GUI issue. I have read about some issues with the 360 control system and those seem to have been addressed in the PC release. If you are considering buying this or other Mass Effect titles, I would recommend the PC version over any game console.
A book written by Drew Karpyshyn, who is also the lead writer for the video game. It is a prequel set 18 years before the events in Mass Effect, the game. The main character is David Anderson, who is also in the game (voiced by Keith David). The novel also gives reveals more on Saren Arterius, the main antagonist of the Mass Effect game. a5c7b9f00b
