Outlaw smugglers Stella Star and Akton manage to pick up a castaway while running from the authorities, who turns out to be the only survivor from a secret mission to destroy a mysterious superweapon designed by the evil Count Zarth Arn. The smugglers are soon recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy to complete the mission, as well as to rescue the Emperor's son, who has gone missing. An outlaw smuggler and her alien companion are recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy to rescue his son and destroy a secret weapon by the evil Count Zarth Arn. Starcrash is so bad it is unbelievable! It obviously tried to cash in on the success of StarWars and was a billion light years way from that great film! It had to be bad though, after all the worst actor of all time (in my opinion!), David Hasselhoff was in it! This man alone is a good enough reason Not to watch Starcrash, that plus the fact of its truly bad story and really bad special effects which are comparable to an episode of DR.Who-but DR. Who was far more original and clever than this abysmal Movie. Avoid this movie at all costs! Sexy and gutsy space pirate Stella Star (perfectly embodied by ravishing brunette cult siren Caroline Munro) and her buddies have to stop the evil Count Zarth Arn (the one and only Joe Spinell, who glowers and tosses his flowing black cape around with sublimely lip-smacking hammy brio) from taking over the universe. That's it for the admittedly flimsy plot, but luckily writer/director Luigi Cozzi's divinely daft and outrageous cinematic potpourri of "Star Wars," "Barbarella," and such vintage Ray Harryhausen stop-motion animation fantasy classics as "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" and "Jason and the Argonauts" definitely doesn't skimp on the wall-to-wall inspired and wildly entertaining lunacy: lovely, yet lethal Amazon warrior women, vicious leaping caveman, multi-colored stars that twinkle like garish Christmas tree lights, pitched spaceship battles, clumsy chopsocky confrontations (Munro's awkward martial arts moves are an absolute riot to behold!), a giant distaff tinfoil guardian, the mouth-watering sight of the delectable Munro in a revealing leather bikini outfit, light sword fights ... the blithely goofy and energetic absurdity never lets up for a minute. It's Cozzi's marvelously ham-fisted, but undeniably whole-hearted sincerity, along with the variable special effects, John Barry's supremely lush and robust orchestral score, and sparkling cinematography by Paul Beeson and Roberto D'Ettorre, that in turn gives this utterly preposterous nonsense a considerable kitschy charm that's impossible to either resist or dislike. Kudos are also in order for the amazing once-in-a-lifetime oddball cast: Marjoe Gortner gleefully hams it up as friendly alien navigator Akron, Christopher Plummer somehow manages to keep a straight face and retain his dignity while saying the silliest dialogue as the Emperor of the Universe, Robert Tessier contributes one of his trademark sneering baddie portrayals as the traitorous Thor, the luscious Nadia Cassini burns up the screen as the wicked Amazon queen Corelia, and a pre-stardom David Hasselhoff radiates a sweet golly-gee wide-eyed appeal as dashing prince Simon. Robotic policeman Elle, with his gung-ho attitude and broad Texas accent (Elle's voiced with hale'n'hearty gusto by Hamilton Camp), provides the amusingly annoying comic relief. A complete campy hoot and a half. Trash king Roger Corman saw enough potential for some quick Dollars to buy the rights for the USA. He severely cut the movie in a futile attempt to make it more serious. Therefore a distinction must be made between the European and American versions of the movie. a5c7b9f00b
