On New Year's Eve, inside a police station that's about to be closed for good, officer Jake Roenick must cobble together a force made up cops and criminals to save themselves from a mob looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop.
A police sergeant must rally the cops and prisoners together to protect themselves on New Year's Eve, just as corrupt policeman surround the station with the intent of killing all to keep their deception in the ranks.
Smooth, organized, and equally energetic. These are the last adjectives I would use to describe John Carpenter's Early work, which is why I was sceptic about seeing his 1972 version. Even though I find Carpenter to be a 'win some lose some' director, I consider myself a fan. Anyway the point I am trying to get at is this. Put your thoughts about Carpenter aside if you try this. Remakes that are updated for the twenty first century are also a 'win some lose some' trend in cinema. This one is a case of the former. Despite a plot that has numerous holes, Assault on Precinct 13 delivers.
It is New Years eve, and snowing like heck in Detroit. Inside Precinct 13, Sergent Roenick and a few of his staff are having a little party. Also inside the precinct (only behind bars) is infamous drug king Marion Bishop. At midnight a nasty surprise comes, a bunch of snipers attempt to siege the building. at first it looks as if Bishop's guys have come to break him out, but it soon becomes evident that these goons are intent on killing Bishop. Roenick knowing that all their lives are in danger tries to pull everybody together Including Bishop and his fellow inmates, in an attempt to make a stand.
Though definitely not a comedy, the movie doesn't take itself very seriously. That is definitely a good thing considering that the storyline is bogus. There are a number of errors, in addition to some old clichés like the bad guys being bad shots, but the film finds is crafted well enough that we the viewers allow them to slide. At one point it even makes reference to the bad shooting issue.
Assault on Precinct 13, is a film that delivers what it intends to, and that, I call satisfactory.
A notorious crime figure (Laurence Fishburne as Marion Bishop ) is finally nabbed, but on his way to the main jail the police van is diverted because of really bad New Year's Eve winter weather. It happens to be to the precinct 13 building which is to be permanently closed down the next day. So, it has a skeleton crew, led by Ethan Hawke as desk Sgt. Jake Roenick , expecting to just spend a quiet evening with a low key celebration to bring in the new year. What seemed incongruous to me is that such a notorious criminal would be sent there without appropriate police reinforcements. Anyway, the whole of the movie, as the title tells us, is an assault, on New year's eve, on precinct 13 to get at Marion Bishop. Maria Bello has a good role as a police therapist stranded there. And Brian Dennehy as the retiring policeman.
SPOILERS: The assumption by all, audience and characters alike, that Bishop's men are trying to break him out. Nope! It was a band of bad cops, who were in business with Bishop, and were intent on killing him before he had a chance to expose them. Maybe that's why no reinforcements were sent to Pct. 13, because Bishop was diverted there by the bad cops. So the whole "battle" is to see if the small crew of men and women, even enlisting the help of several petty prisoners, can hold off the bad cops who seem equipped to fight a whole rogue nation. Turns out Dennehy, who leads them to "safety" via a tunnel, is in with the bad cops, and leads the group into a trap. The good guys prevail anyway, only Bishop and Hawke's character survive, they part in the snowy woods.
The 1976 John Carpenter original has been reworked enough to give the urban thriller a distinct flavor of its own, and stars Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne provide enough gravitas to keep things involving.
