After a meteor shower around the world, the governments learn that it is actually an alien invasion and organize counter-attacks. In Los Angeles, the Marine Sergeant Michael Nantz is ready to retire after a great trauma in the past when he lost all the men under his command in a mission. However, his platoon is assigned to bring the civilians that are sheltered in the Police Department, in an area dominated by the aliens, back to forward operating base (F.O.B.) before the bombs drop on the city. Sgt. Nantz assists 2nd Lieutenant William Martinez and they have to accomplish their mission within three hours. The marines meet few civilians and survivors from other commandos and when they are ready to fly to the base, the helicopter with the wounded marines is shot down and crashes. Now the marines need to reach the base with the civilians through the destroyed streets and highways using a bus. Along their journey, the marines learn how to kill the invaders but only a few of them survive. When the mission is accomplished, Sgt. Nantz and the survivors decide to destroy the alien communication center and consequently their airborne force.
A squad of U.S. Marines becomes the last line of defense against a global invasion.
The movie "World Invasion: Battle LA" was a disappointment for me. There is enough action and passable computer generated special effects to earn it a few stars. To draw some enjoyment, you need to be drunk, watch it with friends and have VERY low expectations. Let's just say I'm not big on drinking... The worst failings of the film were the excruciatingly corny clichés and the annoying camera work. It's as if most of the film was shot by a kid suffering from ADD (attention deficit disorder), using a cheap camcorder. I guess they blew most of their money on CG. The story, simplistic as it is, could have worked but it was badly developed. It's boring enough that you'll find yourself finding holes in the plot, while watching it. Lousy direction, too. They assembled a reasonably high profile cast, but even the actors couldn't save the unsavable. I guess it paid the bills for them but they may "accidentally" leave this movie off from their resumes in the future. A flop which you may choose to watch once if there is absolutely nothing else around.
The film follows a platoon of soldiers (Which includes a cast the likes of Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez and Ramon Rodriguez) who are called into action when a fleet of hostile alien mother ships land in Earth's major cities. The platoon makes their way through the city of Los Angeles to rescue any trapped civilians, and to destroy this deadly new enemy. This is just me trying to make sense of what really is an opening 25 minutes of weak characterizations, followed by basic explosion porn.
The first problem with the film is the screenplay. It has the exact kind of premise with the promise of visual spectacle, exciting action scenes, and cast of army characters that I'd normally expect Michael Bay to direct, and at least make fun, but the movie just gets so dull, so fast. The story is clichéd, the characters are not well written, and the dialogue is seriously hammy. 25 minutes into the film, I don't care about what's going on. Over an hour into the movie, and I STILL don't care.
The cast is a serious disappointment, but it's not all their fault. With such an ensemble that would usually be full of great talent, it just becomes so frustrating that they're secondary to the action sequences. Still, one can't help but be impressed by the visual effects, or the sound design, but it does tend to feel like it's bludgeoning you. Over time, every sound in the film just morphed into one. Also, the camera is often WAY too shaky for it's own good. It also tended to make me feel like I was just watching someone else playing a first-person shooter video game.
Maybe it could have worked if they had pulled back a little bit, but Battle: Los Angeles is several flaws, and a hundred BOOMS! too many.

It's a film of noble sacrifice and "good deaths" but surprisingly few chuckles.
