In Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race who have attacked Earth via our power supply.
Two young American men travel to Moscow to sell their social networking/party locating software. Whilst at a nightclub, they venture outside to see what is believed to be, an Aurora Borealis. However, the light separates and falls from the sky. They discover that the lights are aliens, using the power supply to hunt and kill humans.
TDH wants us to believe that Moscow is much like a little town with a 4-digit population. How else do we explain the two Americans first bumping into the U.S. girl from their cell-phone, and then running into their Russian nemesis (the guy who stole their business idea)? Number 6 (from "The Prisoner") bumped into less acquaintance than that. Talk about chronic filmic coincidentalitis. Or perhaps the point was merely that Moscow has only a handful of up-end nightclubs, and that given just a little luck one might even bump into Putin there. WellÂ… "luck".
Speaking of which, are we to assume that Putin was wiped out along with everyone else? That would be a major silver lining in all this for the Muscovites, methinks. So the aliens aren't so evil after all.
As for other nonsense, there is the issue of the brunette (hiding in a bus) hearing the blond guy's shouts but not hearing the PLETHORA OF BULLETS whizzing through the air just seconds earlier. Plus the fact that nearly every Russian here speaks English (which couldn't be further from reality), but that's a far-fetched plot-device I will ignore since it was utilized for the viewer's benefit, to make the movie flow more easy. You try finding a Muscovite who speaks 3 words of English on a busy rush-hour afternoon and you will need some luck, let alone finding such rare Russian specimen when there's an alien invasion going on in which 99% of the city's population had been zapped into oblivion.
There is other nonsense that can easily be overlooked for the simple reasons that: a) there isn't that much of it, and b) there is no major BS going on here, especially when one considers that this is a sci-fi alien-attack horror flick from 2011, and c) TDH is a fairly fun, non-boring offering, with smaller flashes of originality here and there.
What did annoy me though was the dumb decision to cast a bland silver-spoon nepotist such as Max Minghella, son of the famed minghellian director/producer (creator of overrated fluff such as "The English Patient"). Max looks and acts so much like Colin Hanks (the very useless son of the mostly useless Tom Hanks), that they practically look like brothers. But don't all bland nepotists look alike?
Having watched the trailer I was curious to see the movie. But I did not expect it to be good.
It seemed silly, and it is, but in the end, I found it to be quite entertaining (B-movie style).
The alien idea is outrageous and a lot of the events and characters are outrageous & cheesy. I especially liked the depiction of the Russian guys (hilarious).
I'm not sure if the movie was intended as a serious thing or more as a satire, but it does have some WTF & humorous moments, mixed with some pretty sad deaths (some unexpected).
They even tried to inject some scientific elements to fight the aliens, a rare thing in that type of movies.
The actions of the characters don't make much sense, they act fairly stupidly & mostly survive because of "luck" (also know as "because the story must go forward").
The sets & effects were not bad.
In summary, as a B-movie, it's entertaining.
The Darkest Hour isn't just a dark horse contender for the year's biggest joke, it's the darkest.
