An elite team of Navy SEALs embark on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent. A team of elite US Navy SEALs is called when an undercover CIA agent by the name of Lisa Morales is kidnapped, and almost beat to death. The team of guys responsible for the kidnapping end up correlating to two men who construct a devastating plan to rebel against America, by means of terrorism. Once again, the SEALs are brought in to attempt to neutralize the enemies. You can call me a dirty, stinking, Karl Marx-loving liberal for not having a lot of love for the counter-terrorist actioner "Act Of Valor". As a movie fan and a fledging screenwriter, I can't have any love out of sense that reality and fantasy are like fire and gasoline. They don't and shouldn't mix.

The film opens with the terrorist bombing of a school in the Philippines. An American ambassador, his son and other kids, lured by an ice cream truck, are killed, courtesy of Chechen-born, Islam-faithful terrorist Abu Shabal (Jason Cottle). Meanwhile, in Costa Rica, a CIA agent (Nestor Serrano) is killed and his partner (Roselyn Sanchez, "Without A Trace") is kidnapped by the henchmen of drug runner Mikhail "Christo" Troykovich (Alex Veadov). The members of Bandito Platoon, SEAL Team Seven are deployed to save the agent, who has intel that Shabal and Traykovich are the schemers to send a group of suicide bombers into the US. The SEALS are more than determined to stop them at all costs.

Granted, having active duty Navy Seals as the film's protagonists is the film's jewel but it's also its' weakest limb. Since they're non-actors and their identities must be somewhat clandestine, the script by Kurt Johnstad ("300") is infested with a lack of character development and second-grade school dialogue. I know this is an action film and I had no grand expectations, but you have a problem with your film when the actors playing the bad guys outshine the actors as the good guys. Directors/producers Scott Waugh and Mike "Mouse" McCoy, the men behind a seven-minute documentary focusing on the SEALS, may have had good intentions when making this film, but all they have accomplished is making a money-making, 111-minute, armed forces recruitment ad, filled with POV gunshot and video imagery to hook in the gamer crowd (YVAN ENT NIOJ). The action sequences are the only legitimate element within the film's fictional aura, and that's it.

This film maybe be dedicated to the every SEAL member, alive and deceased, who fought since the September 11 attacks (calling it 9/11 is pretty tasteless, in my humble opinion, reducing the tragedy to a fad catch phrase), but they deserved much better than this "act of exploitation". If you are or related to an solider, this isn't a jab against you. Only the filmmakers. Act of Valor is a refreshingly new and ambitious idea, that takes the stories of active U.S. Marines and turns them into one big story, which is then played out by the very Marines who experienced them. I loved the concept, but this film falls way short of expectations. I believe the purpose of military is the service and protection of our nation, but in Act of Valor the Marines are portrayed as trigger happy Americans. We see the Marines, following up on CIA Intel, going into four different foreign countries, shooting first and asking questions later. Is this really the image of our military that we want to portray to the rest of the world? Regardless of what's real and what's not, these Marines come off as ruthless, with an attitude of 'f you we're American, we'll do what we want.' As expected, the action scenes were some of the best and most realistic I've ever seen. I would except nothing less, being that the film features men who have been in actual combat and know what it looks like. The acting, also as excepted, was really awful, but for the first time in the twenty month history of this blog I won't blame the actors for it, since after all, they aren't really actors. The action sequences alone more than make up for the awful acting job, but again, I have a real problem with the message this film is sending out to the world. Chronicling the heroism and every day life of a U.S. Marine is admirable, but portraying them like Bruce Willis in Die Hard isn't doing them any favors, in fact it's making an already difficult job harder. It's thin material, to say the least, and manipulative to boot, putting women, children, and a SEAL father-to-be in jeopardy in ways more about servicing cheap thrills than any larger point about the perilous state of the world in 2012. Yes, they are. They are not named in the film's credits, however. Yes. Christo is based on Viktor Bout, a notorious Russian billionaire currently awaiting trial in the US for black market arms dealing. Like Christo he enjoyed an immensely lavish lifestyle, ran his own fleet of smuggling planes, skilfully circumvented international law and ruthlessly sold to the highest bidder. He also inspired Nicholas Cage's film Lord of War. Abu Shabal is based on Shamil Basayev, Chechen terrorist leader and Jihadi who amongst other atrocities was responsible for the 2004 Beslan School massacre. Like Shabal he advocated the indiscriminate mass killing of civilians using explosive vests and utilised the wives of his dead fighters as suicide bombers, nicknaming them "Black Widows". He was killed in 2006 by an explosion during an arms deal, possibly assassinated by the Russian secret service. The Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG-7) is expelled from the launch tube by a primary charge and then carried towards the target by a rocket motor. However, the rocket motor doesn't initiate and the armour piercing warhead doesn't arm until it is some distance from the launcher so that the firer isn't killed by the backblast or a premature detonation. When the SEAL is struck by the warhead he is so close to the firer that the rocket motor hasn't kicked in yet and the warhead hasn't had time to arm so his body armour is able to save him. The SEALs not only rescued Morales but were able to recover the Blackberry phone belonging to Christo's henchman. This is a crucial plot point as the information they recover from it leads them to the arms transfer in Somalia and Christo's yacht in the Pacific. Terrorists worldwide from the IRA to the Viet Cong to Al-Quaeda have a reputation for obsessively writing their plans down, the SEAL's killing of Osama bin Laden was not nearly as important in the War on Terror as their recovery of his mobile phones, laptop computers etc which provided invaluable information on his organisation. Presumably it must have been surgically re-attached. Several alterations were made for the international cut of the movie: some of the footage was either cut out or re-dubbed for international markets which mitigates the movie's message. Sometimes there is the exact same dialogue happening during an entirely different shot. Mostly the offscreen comments were changed but there are also five altered scenes resulting in a time difference of almost 1 minute between both versions. a5c7b9f00b
