Batman has not been seen for ten years. A new breed of criminal ravages Gotham City, forcing 55-year-old Bruce Wayne back into the cape and cowl. But, does he still have what it takes to fight crime in a new era? People might not think much of DVD movies, but this is one you won't want to miss! It makes me sad that 2D animated superhero movies won't be popular in theaters. I'm glad we at least have some medium to witness how good they are. I admit that I'm not that familiar with the Frank Miller comic. Well, a ton of Frank Miller stuff has been reviewed by Linkara, who doesn't have a high opinion of him. Anyway, this is based on a Frank Miller comic that features Batman retiring and deciding to come back after ten years. Yeah, I admit that the plot isn't that great. It's a little too simple, but this is still a great movie.

The best part is probably how you're blown away by how good the animation is. Animated shows are still 2D and it's gorgeous artwork like this that make you appreciate the technique. As far as I know, this isn't a direct sequel to any other animated DC movie so it's easy enough for me to understand. The best parts are probably the fights with the Mutant leader. They're realistic and they're extremely intense for an animated film. It was weird and cool to watch a PG-13 cartoon movie. It lives up to its rating. It seems like they could have just made it into one fairly long movie. It's great to have things build up so well. ***1/2 The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and its sequel the Dark Knight Returns Part 2, are both animated movies of the DC animated line-up produced by Bruce Tim and his crew. Dark Knight Returns part one and two are based Frank Miller's famous comic of the same name. The Dark Knight Returns along with Watchmen is hailed as one of the best comics ever written. I can see why people think that way. Dark Knight Returns is not my favorite Batman but I do respect it and Watchmen. They both dealt with many heavy themes that not to many comics at the time would touch, and they were very dark as well.

This review will be on The Dark Knight Returns Part 1. The film revolves around this gang known as the mutants. This gang is wreaking havoc in Gotham, and the police are powerless. At the same time you have an aging Bruce Wayne, who has retired, observing these terrible acts of crime. Ultimately he forces himself back into the game. The story revolves around Batman and his new sidekick, Carrie Kelly a.k.a. Robin, taking back Gotham from the mutants.

I really enjoy this film. I do not like these films as much as the animated series or Nolan's Batman films, but I still highly enjoy them. Batman is awesome and more brutal than ever. Despite being old Batman kicks a lot of ass and is very brutal as well. Like Bruce Greenwood in Under the Red Hood, Peter Weller's voice took some getting used to, but it grew on me.

The character Carries Kelly surprised me a bit. I've never been that big a fan of Robin. In most incarnations I find him annoying like in Batman and Robin. However, this Robin was not annoying, and can be useful. Although she does not get a whole lot to do in this film, she does have her moments. Ariel Winter did a nice job voicing Carrie.

The rest of the voice cast did a good job as well. The art took some getting used to. It is not as appealing to the eyes as other DC animated works. At least they did not use the art from the comic. However, the art grew on me over time. The animation is very smooth which made for some good action. The action is awesome and very well animated. The score was also decent.

Overall this and Part 2 is a faithful adaptation to a great comic. Any fans of the Dark Knight returns comic should not be disappointed. The budgets for the DC Universe Animated Original Movies only allow for films of about 70 to 75 minutes in length. The graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns is long enough that it couldn't be adapted as a single animated film without seriously compromising the original story. Therefore, the film has been split into two parts to allow for a more faithful adaptation. Fairly faithful. This movie is not as faithful the animated version of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One where the entire movie was a page for page recreation, but it is perhaps the second most faithful adaptation of a graphic novel to movie in the DC Animated series. Some scenes are changed around, some scenes are removed, some characters are visually altered but the story in the movie remains the same as the story in the graphic novel, and there are no sweeping changes to the original story. The biggest omission is that Batman does not have narration in the movie like he does in the graphic novel. In the graphic novel Frank Miller wrote a constant line of narration from the point of view of Batman's thoughts and his war journal. This narration did more than just explain the actions that the reader was seeing and actually revealed some important story information that was not otherwise seen or discussed. The filmmakers decided to leave out this narration and let the visual aspect of the story stand on its own. In the 1980s, the time when Frank Miller wrote The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, Dick Grayson had already left Batman's side to become the hero Nightwing. He was replaced by an orphan and street hooligan named Jason Todd, whom readers greatly disliked. Eventually DC Comics created a publicity stunt to put Jason Todd's fate in the reader's hands. In a comic book story line called A Death in the Family, the Joker had beaten Jason Todd to near death. DC Comics then created a 1-900 phone number for readers to vote whether Todd lived or died. The votes were for his death and Jason was killed in the next issue. While no actual reference is given to how Jason died in The Dark Knight Returns, it is not unreasonable to assume that the events depicted in A Death in the Family could also have happened in the alternate timeline that The Dark Knight Returns takes place in. An interesting note is that The Dark Knight Returns was published 2 years before the storyline in which Jason Todd was murdered. Eventually a third Robin named Tim Drake would join Batman on his war on crime, but The Dark Knight Returns was written before that character was created and does not take this into account. For another DC animated film that deals with Jason Todd as Robin, Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) may be of interest. It is not explained where Dick Grayson is during the events of this story. As stated, he was not the Robin that was killed and brought Bruce Wayne to decide on retiring as Batman. In the original graphic novel when Batman is first defeated by the Mutant leader, Batman begins to monologue to himself as if he were speaking to Dick Grayson but does not reveal any information about his fate in this story. However, in Frank Miller's graphic novel sequel to this story Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again it is revealed that Dick Grayson went crazy from years of rejection from Batman and became the second Joker. It is set in an alternate version of the 1980s, in a similar manner as the film adaptation of Watchmen (2009). When the story was originally written this was a contemporary time setting and only became an alternate history setting after it took many years to produce as a movie. For more of Frank Miller's take on Batman you may enjoy Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, Batman: Year One and its animated adaptation. For more of superheros in a dystopian future you may enjoy Paul Pope's Batman: Year 100 and Kaare Andrews' Spider-Man: Reign. a5c7b9f00b
