In the darkest days of World War II, Hitler's armies are storming through Europe, annihilating all opposition in their path. But U.S. Colonel Barnsby plots to strike a crippling blow to the brutal Nazi forces. To succeed, he'll need the help of the most skilled and lethal soldiers in the world: the Force 10 squad, fresh from its triumphant mission at Navarone. But when the team's plan goes awry in a firestorm of blistering battles, Barnsby and the squad's hard-driving Major Mallory are forced to devise a new and even more dangerous scheme to attack the Nazi war machine . . . or risk losing the rest of Europe to its awesome, destructive power.
During World War II, several oddly assorted military experts are teamed in a mission to raid and destroy a bridge vital to enemy strategy.
Much like its predecessor, Force 10 from Navarone is fairly monotonous, but less eventful and of less quality.
If the sole purpose of the film was to get the man from "Jaws" and Jaws in the same film, well it's a winner. In fact it has a pretty star studded cast, you've got Han Solo, Apollo Creed, The Jackal and Barbara Bach who also in the film with Jaws. Though much wasted talent I'm afraid. Watchable, but nothing too memorable about it. The characters and dialogue quite dull.
It's 1943. After the successful raid in 'The Guns of Navarone', Major Keith Mallory (Robert Shaw) and Sergeant Miller (Edward Fox) are back in England given a mission to kill Nicolai in Yugoslavia. They thought he was executed during Navarone but was actually a German spy. They are the only ones who can identify the spy who is suspected of infiltrating the partisans. They are joined by American unit Force 10 led by Colonel Barnsby (Harrison Ford). American MP Weaver (Carl Weathers) is swept up in the operation. After getting shot down, they encounter local fighters led by Maritza (Barbara Bach) and Drazak (Richard Kiel).
There are a few too many unnecessary twists and turns. It would be more compelling to concentrate on Nicolai and the eventual mission. Weaver could have been in Force 10 instead of the complicated way that he gets roped in. Also being captured early on creates two problems. It splits the group in two and it requires convoluted escapes. At its core, there is an interesting war thriller. I just think the group needs to stay together.
Under Hamilton's moribund direction, this becomes a Bond-in-uniform saga, with a can-they-spike-the-Kraut-guns-in-time plot. All the potentially exciting set pieces (traitor in our midst, whose side are the Gucci-clad partisans on?) are thrown away with a disregard for the basic mechanics of suspense, and the climax is literally cardboard thin.
