Sidelined for five years since they spectacularly rescued New York City from destruction. the superstars of the supernatural spring back into action when the infant son of single mother Dana Barrett becomes the target of a powerful demonic force. Reunited with the no-nonsense Zeddemore, nerdy nearsighted Louis, and their ever-industrious secretary Janine, the heroes of the hereafter must put a stop to an enormous underground river of slime ready to rot the roots of the entire Big Apple. Now, if your hometown was on the verge of being sucked down into the 10th level of Hell, who else would you call? Five years after the battle against Gozer, a restraining order has forbidden Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, and Egon Spengler from working as Ghostbusters, so they've found other jobs. Ray owns a bookstore, "Ray's Occult," and performs at children's birthday parties with Winston. Egon conducts experiments at the Institute For Advanced Theoretical Research. Dana broke up with Peter and married another man, and Peter Peter now hosts a local TV show, "The World of the Psychic". Dana, now the divorced mother of an 8-month-old baby named Oscar, works in the restoration department at the Manhattan Museum of Art. Strange things start happening when Oscar's baby carriage takes off by itself with him in it and it stops in the middle of 1st Avenue. While Dana's boss, Janosz Poha, is restoring a painting of a 16th-century tyrant named Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf, the painting comes to life. Vigo wants to live again by taking over Oscar's body. Vigo takes complete control of Janosz and orders Janosz to get Dana to cooperate. Janosz has his own agenda: he's in love with Dana. When Peter, Ray, and Egon try to help Dana, they are arrested and put on trial for violating the restraining order. When the ghosts of the killer Scoleri Brothers invade the courtroom, the judge is forced to remove the restraining order against the guys so they can put the Scoleri Brothers in a ghost trap. After this, Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston re-open Ghostbusters, and mayor's assistant Jack Hardemeyer tries to slow them down however he can, because he believes that the Ghostbusters are frauds who will hurt the mayor's chances of becoming the governor of New York. The Ghostbusters and their lawyer, Louis Tully, refuse to be stopped by Jack. When Jack has the Ghostbusters put in the Parkview Mental Hospital, there is an eclipse and Janosz kidnaps Oscar for Vigo. The mayor wants the Ghostbusters on the job, and when the mayor hears that Jack had the Ghostbusters committed, he fires Jack and has the Ghostbusters released to try to rescue Oscar from Vigo, which Vigo intends to make as difficult as possible. In the movie world there are a lot of movies that have sequels. It is also a known fact that people talk about a sequel, commenting that it was either better or worse than its predecessor. However when it comes to the sequel for ‘one of the biggest films of the 1980's', that being Ghostbusters II, the fuss was not so big and the talk was not so loud, about it being good or bad. Although it was made a while ago, Ghostbusters II has many nostalgic moments, which makes me wonder why it is was not a hit. When Venkman says ‘Sometimes, weird things happen, someone has to deal with it, and who are you gonna call?!', you know it is time once again to call on the ‘Ghostbusters'.

Five years after waging a war on slime that cost New York City millions, the Ghostbusters find themselves out of business--until an ancient tyrant, preparing a return to the Earthly domain through a river of slime under the city and his portrait at the Manhattan Museum of Art, sets his sights on Dana Barrett's baby as the new home for his wicked soul! With the help of the Museum's possessed curator, he plans to turn New York into a really scary place to live! Now only the Ghostbusters can save New York City, by turning paranormal pest control into an art form!

The surprising part about this film is that almost every aspect from the first, returned to do it all a second time. Director Ivan Reitman does a grand job in directing Ghostbusters II. I am certain that he wanted to make this film as similar to the first Ghostbusters as he could, considering that formula seemed to be very popular with many movie fans. The screenplay was once again written by two of the stars of the movie, that being Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis. They certainly put a lot of thought into the humour being presented, which made this film seem very original and funny. If either of these areas of Ghostbusters II were a failure, than I am sure that this film would not have been anywhere near as good, as I thought it was.

I was glad to see all the cast back for a second time. The way we see the Ghostbusters five years on is very amusing. With two of them doing parties and being a joke, one doing a TV talk show and the other being a psychologist. Bill Murray still added that funny touch to the movie, with his character of Venkman being outrageous, which made the movie funny to watch. All the other Ghostbusters characters were good once again. Stantz, Spengler and Zeddemore are as they were before, smart or as silly as ever. Breaking up this team would for me seem an injustice.

The supporting cast was also good. Dana Barrett was performed well again by Sigourney Weaver. Dana is a woman whose life always seems to be troubled by paranormal pests and a man by the name of Venkman. Joining the cast is ‘Ally MacBeals' Peter MacNichol, who is the zany character of Janosz Poha, Dana Barrett's possessed art boss. I also found it clever to have the characters of Janine (Annie Potts) and Louis (Rick Moranis) return as lovers, as this adds a bit of spice and variety to the story. Furthermore, Dana's baby Oscar was a cutie, and by the end of the movie was an integral character to the makeup of the story. Add in the return of Slimer, which although he was not as funny as I had hoped he would be, put a smile on my face every time I saw him.

There are some very funny scenes and lines in Ghostbusters II. I like how the movie starts, with Dana's baby carriage just taking off by itself. Then you also have the funny courtroom scene, where the Ghostbusters are charged as guilty of their crime, then in the next instant are tackling ghost in the courtroom, by the judge's requests! At the end of this scene the guys remark ‘Two in the box, ready to go, we be fast and they be slow'. Yet when we see a river of slime under the city, which can cause people to turn evil, you know that the fun has returned again. Then for a cop to exclaim that ‘the titanic has just arrived', was a very game scene to create in a movie, but very funny as well. Only the Ghostbusters could get away something like that. Furthermore, to top the first movies ‘Marshmallow man', the scene with the ‘Statue of Liberty' was very ingenious and makes for a hilarious time, as I wanted to see what would happen next.

I can not remember if this was a big movie back when it was released in 1989. I am surprised if it wasn't, as it was everything that you could want from a sequel, and that little bit more. Although it was not as good as the original, I still had a fun time watching the Ghostbusters a second time around and is must-see for fans. With great special effects, funny story and roles from all involved, Ghostbusters II is not as bad a sequel as some would have you to believe. What's more, I was reading the other day that there was talk of Ghostbusters III. Part of me is a little disappointed that this film never made it off the ground, because just imagine all the fun that we have missed out on seeing. Be ready to believe them all over again!

CMRS gives ‘Ghostbusters II': 4 (Very Good Film) I personally think that this sequal was better than the original. Although i am a fan of both films there was just something about the second one that made it better. However, i feel that the only element of the first one which is slightly better is the inclusion of the stay puft marshmellow man. I think the finalle of the second one draws a much more dramatic climax and love the part where they make the statue of liberty walk through the city. In my opinion, what also makes this sequal successful is that the cast remained the same and there were no changes to the main actors/actresses from the original. both films are absolutely brilliant, i first saw them when i was about aged 7 and at the time I was a fan of the cartoons which appeared on TV. Both films will always remain in my all time favourites, but the sequal will always be regarded as the better of the two. Ghostbusters II doesn't seem to be pushing as hard as its predecessor, which of course makes it even more fun. There's an old-shoeishness to the proceedings; even Murray's owlish put-downs seem a little less snide-they're almost affectionate, if that's not too outrageous a word in this context. [16 Jun 1989, p.1] Five years after their near destruction of New York City after which they were sued until bankrupt and a restaining order placed on them that prevents them from working as Ghostbusters, Doctors Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), aided by their attorney Louis Tully (Rick Moranis), finally convince a judge to lift the restraining order. Voila! The Ghostbusters are back in business and just in the nick of time as a massive river of "mood slime" is flowing through the abandoned Pneumatic Transit tunnels under Manhattan, and it appears that an ancient Carpathian sorcerer, Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf, (Wilhelm von Homburg) wants to possess Dana Barrett's (Sigourney Weaver) 8-month-old baby Oscar (William T. Deutschendorf and Henry J. Deutschendorf II). Ghostbusters II is the sequel to Ghost Busters (1984) (1984), both of which were written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Ghostbusters II was subsequently novelized in 1989 by American scifi/mystery writer Ed Naha. "Mood slime" is pictured as pink ectoplasm and described as a psychoreactive substance that responds to human emotional states. In short, it feeds on bad vibes. It was not explicitly mentioned what the slime was made of. They do, however, imply the slime was "brought to life" by Vigo and powered by the general bad vibes of the New Yorkers. You could take from this that the slime was either created by "ghost-power" or that the slime started from something very small and absorbed various elements from its environment. It was eventually established in the 2009 video game Ghostbusters (2009) that the slime was manufactured by a contraption created by Ivo Shandor, the Gozer worshiper. Dana only mentions that Oscar's father left her to play with orchestras in Europe. Fans have speculated that the father is Timothy Carhart's character from the original movie, the violinist that Venkman calls "the stiff." This isn't made clear in the movie. It may be that, through his father, Oscar is a member of some family or bloodline that makes him a distant relative of Vigo. Or perhaps Dana's experience being possessed in the original film may have somehow made her son ripe for possession himself. Of course, it is actually Janosz who selects Oscar, no doubt due to his feelings for Dana. Vigo simply requests "a child" and it is likely that he would have been just as satisfied with any other baby. With just four minutes to go until midnight, Dana watches helplessly as Vigo begins his transfer into Oscar's body. Suddenly, the torch-bearing arm of the Statue of Liberty crashes through the skylight, Dana grabs Oscar, interrupting the transfer, and the Ghostbusters rappel down. They shoot positively-charged slime all over Janosz (Peter MacNicol) (who'll wake up feeling like "a million bucks"). Vigo immobilizes Dana and the Ghostbusters and materializes out of the painting. He picks up Oscar and prepares to possess his body. Meanwhile outside, Louis arrives in full ghostbusters attire, and the crowd begins singing "Auld Lang Syne" as he zaps the slime barrier with a proton stream. The positive energy causes the barrier to disintegrate and forces Vigo back into the painting. In desperation, Vigo takes over Ray's body, but the others cover him with positive slime, destroying Vigo. As they revel in all the positive energy, Winston notices that the painting of Vigo has been replaced with a scene showing the four Ghostbusters standing protectively around Oscar. "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" written by Jackie Wilson. In the movie it is performed by Howard Huntsberry, though the Jackie Wilson original is heard during the dancing toaster scene. a5c7b9f00b
