Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City. Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again. When a Rookie cop named Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face who has other plans. He's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this cold hearted killer from the city's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader. Decided to re-watch The Spirit after having binge watched the TV series Suits which stars Gabriel Macht as well as others.I wanted to see some of Macht's earlier work since he comes off so commanding and charismatic in Suits. He makes a compelling Super Hero despite the flawed script and direction, this is after all Frank Miller directing.Despite that Gabriel's efforts radiate more charm in view of his future role in Suits.Eva Mendes, not used enough, has a thankless role as eye candy Sand Serif, but even that is worth a look. Some other major attractions like Stana Katic as Officer Morgenstern has a kick-ass appeal since she will go on to play Kate Beckett opposite Nathan Fillion (Firefly) in Castle. As many reviewers have commented, the imagery is striking, not withstanding the script and plot.I think it's worth more than the 4.8 it's rated at,and it's a revelation to look back and see an early performance of Gabriel Macht. He would make a great Superman.Don't go in expecting too much, it's a visual comic book. Samuel Jackson's over the top performance might make some a bit leery, again, it's just a visual comic book that hasn't been taken to the next creative level.

One last observation,is it just me or does Frank Miller have a thing about people blowing their own brains out? There are times in a person's life where they detest their decision to pay hard earned money to view someone's attempt at cinematography. Where the very thought of the movie again after the initial viewing hurts their brain to consider the painful attempt at movie magic. Where they pray for Jehovah God to allow them to time travel back an hour and 45 and to walk up behind themselves in line; and smack themselves in the back of the head for even considering such a pathetic excuse for a film! This absolutely is one of those times! This movie is an adaptation from some 1940's comic, which initially sounded interesting: however they pathetically blend the 50's with present day amenities. They are driving in old deuce coupes and yet using cell phones and they have beat "flatfoot" cops and yet gunship helicopters.

The plot was bleak and a stretch; the continuity was pathetic and the characters were a joke.

The hero has raspy monologues which are redundant and boring, the premise is clear and yet nonsense and the dialogue is forced and predictable.

The effects of a 300 or a sin city which are done by the same person- are fascinating and enjoyable; these effects are comic-y and "photo shopped," especially the stupid tie and Chuck Taylor's. Some production company fat cat had a nephew graduate from Bryman or ITTech and he let them work on this project out of the gate – Mis-TAKE! Ole Sam Jackson has done some real clinkers with some dopey characters, but this one takes the cake. He and his henchman and their subplot of SURPRISE "world domination", were hackney and LAME. I mean this guy rocked my face off in pulp fiction: but in this movie it looks like he looked for the worst possible script with the most ridiculous dialogue and signed up! The only saving aspect of this movie was that they picked two gorgeous actresses to be antagonists – in Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson. While their characters suck BLUE CHUNKS... they aren't bad to look at - - so I managed to stay awake during the movie.

It was funny to see ole Mr. Arnold from "Wonder Years" back in the buis'… though unfortunately his only line seemed to be GD… I lost count at 9… very bothersome! I could go on and on at the boredom that I underwent PAINSTAKINGLY watching this movie but I will spare you by saying this….

If your thinking about seeing this movie; you would profit more from sticking your hand in the garbage disposal! Not even in the same trailer park as 300 or other graphic novels made movie.

Do yourself a favor – write a soldier, read to your children, re-watch Dick Tracy – Do not see this movie! F+ ¼ of a Star out of Four The movie's cleverest idea is to give the Octopus identical clone henchmen with names like Phobos, Logos, and Huevos, all played by Louis Lombardi with a marvelous fat-boy idiot grin. The Spirit is based on a 1940s newspaper strip of the same name by American comics writer Will Eisner [1917-2005]. It was adapted for the screen by comics artist and screenwriter Frank Miller, best known for his Sin City comics. Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson): The daughter of Commissioner Dolan, in her pre-war appearances she tried to win the affection of The Spirit by getting into trouble which required The Spirit's assistance. After the war, the relationship evolved with a romantic affection between the two strongly implied. In later years (in November 1950), Ellen ran and won the role of Mayor of Central City.

Commissioner Dolan (Dan Lauria): The Police Commissioner of Central City, he met The Spirit on his first adventure and although knowing that The Spirit was Denny Colt was under orders to apprehend The Spirit for the first few months. Although Dolan's first name was always given as "Eustace" in all his post-war Spirit tales, he was called "Diogenes" by his sister-in-law in one pre-war story.

The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson): The Spirit's arch nemesis, The Octopus never showed his face in the stories but readers could always identify the character by the distinctive gloves he always wore. A master of disguise, The Octopus was involved in the epic fight with The Spirit which left Denny Colt blinded.

The Spirit (Gabriel Macht): Police Officer Denny Colt was thought dead and buried at Wildwood Cemetery after a gunfight in which he is covered in some experimental chemicals. Returning to life he assumes the guise of The Spirit and wages a one-man war against crime and injustice. Although he has no superpowers, The Spirit is able to take practically an endless amount of physical punishment. It is also suggested that the chemicals in which he was doused in have prolonged his life. Huevos rancheros is a popular dish eaten for breakfast in Mexico. Basically it's composed of a couple of sunny side up eggs over a couple of corn tortillas with hot tomato or chili sauce poured over them, served with beans and cheese. The reason why the clones are called that is uncertain, possibly only for comical reasons as well as the Adios Amigos clones at the end. In Spanish slang, huevos refer to testicles, so it could be some form of reference to them as being badasses (hot temper and big... huevos). Other than Frank Miller adapting this film, and the visual style used for both films, there are no connections. To get the 12 rating, George Miller needed to make some modifications: three cuts were made plus one digital modification. This is also the version shown in movie theaters. The uncut version was released by Lionsgate on DVD and Blu-ray disc, is rated 15 and it's called "Extended Cut". a5c7b9f00b
