A small group of survivors are left behind after millions of people suddenly vanish and the world is plunged into chaos and destruction.
Nicolas Cage is Rayford Steele, a pilot and a man in pain. His wife is driving him crazy with bible quotes and end of the world prophecies. His beloved daughter Chloe has fled the nest to go off to college and to avoid her mother. He is left behind with his dim-witted son. To release some of the pressure and frustration, captain Steele prepares to have some adultery with a hot flight attendant.
When Chloe touches down to pay her father a surprise visit on his birthday, she soon finds out he has been called in to work a New York to London stretch. She catches him off-guard flirting with a flight attendant and is a bit disappointed in him. Lucky for her she just met herself a romantic interest in Buck the investigative journalist to take her mind off matters.
In mid-air, disaster strikes. Some of the passengers and flight crew disappear into thin air, only to leave their clothes and personal belongings behind. We soon find out that this is a worldwide phenomenon, millions of people have disappeared in the same fashion.
This movie does not have a lot going for it. The cast is not good, the visual effects are mediocre at best and the editing is raw and awkward. Nicolas Cage seems to be lost and uncomfortable at times, like he has been strong-armed into this production. Some characters provide unintentional comic relief that give the film a campy feel, but it is too little to tip the scale in its favor.
Having previously read the book series, I was happy to see a much more polished production, and better actors than the 2000 version. When you cast Kirk Cameron and he's the star talent, well....... I disagree that there was hidden Christian agendas throughout the movie. The whole book series is closely based on the book of Revelations as the events unfold. The only real creative liberties taken were in the creation of characters to give the story a human element. The actual series is quite long, and if they develop the book series to the big screen, I think you'll find that it's not portraying the ones Left Behind as moral degenerates but, more like regular people drowning in the culture of greed that the world is becoming. I say this because, later in the series these folks become the heroes, again creating the human element, as you witness them develop into their full potential. Sure, the story comes from the Christian bible but, the human element is quite real and exists in each of us. Who doesn't know someone that's been flattened by the churning machine our world has become and never really completely recover? Just follow the series and you'll see that it's all about the unique qualities, skills and gifts that reside in ALL of us, and the elements of self reflection and realization. Many can argue (and I'll usually agree) that the modern Christian church message is pretty distorted, and pretty judgmental. But, few can argue that the actual message of Christ (whether you are a believer or not) is a beautiful message teaching tolerance, patience, compassion and love toward each other, regardless of how they believe, social status, income bracket, etc. You could almost say He created the first MASS hippie movement of that time. Teaching peace, love and tolerance. :)
The Rapture won’t come soon enough for the unfortunate souls forced to suffer through Left Behind.
