The Animatrix is a collection of several animated short films, detailing the backstory of the "Matrix" universe, and the original war between man and machines which led to the creation of the Matrix.
This movie, (or series of episodes, I suppose) is a total mindf*ck. I would highly recommend not to watch this high, because the concepts introduced are extremely fascinating and can lead to very intense questioning of everything you have accepted as definite before. Trust me, it's gotten me totally changed in the way I perceive reality and the world around me. This is not a joke. Please be aware of the dangers of watching something so mind-opening.
For example, something that particularly got me was the concept of artificial intelligence and actually determining what it actually means to be _alive_.
Just remember to THINK when you watch this.
Although the 'man's fear of technology' thing has been around for centuries, I could see one too many terminator-esc references in the two parts. Mega-C is right, you didn't have to see the ripping and pulverising or hear the blood curdling screams of the humans to know that they were being killed. I'll just have to accept that it's just a characteristic of manga, I suppose.
Yeah, I thought there were wierd nonsense bits like the robot UN representatives that looked like tin cans in stockings, and the strange tale that mankind created AI that they couldn't stop.
Into the second half of The Second Renaissance, watching the sybiotic relationship bit and the narratator voiceover, I was a bit discusted - that was just gore for the sake of gore, and didn't exactly contribute anything to the narrative. I probably shouldn't moan, because everybody has different levels of what they think is acceptable.
Overall, the Animatrix is, like others said, a good professional, slick, chunk of Matrix-ish animation to sink your teeth into, whether you like Reloaded or not. Personally, I loved Reloaded, especially the Smith scenes. The thinky stuff was perhaps a bit extreme, like depth for no particular reason. How much I understood, I'm not sure. One for the mindless forum addicts to take to pieces, I guess. (Sorry). Going to a large cinema to see it was a bonus as well, as everyone around me was oohing and ahhing and gasping as Neo & co did their thang. That was half the fun.
