Sarah Ashburn, an FBI agent, is extremely ambitious and has her eye on a promotion, but she doesn't get along with her co-workers. She is sent to Boston to uncover the identity of an elusive drug lord, Mr. Larkin, by tracking down his proxy, Rojas, and is told that she'll have a good shot at the promotion if she finds Larkin. When she arrives in Boston, she learns that Larkin has been eliminating his competition and taking over their operations. She learns that Rojas is in Boston PD custody and goes to see him to ask him what he knows about Larkin, but is warned that the cop who arrested Rojas, Shannon Mullins, is very territorial, and she is not exactly sociable. When the two meet they don't get along. When Mullins learns why Ashburn is in Boston, she decides to find Larkin herself. Ashburn is told by her boss to work with Mullins, but it won't be easy because Ashburn does things by the book while Mullins does things her way.

When I went to see this film at the cinema I had my doubts about it. However, after the first few minutes I knew my doubts were in vain. Everyone in the cinema was laughing all the way through. Unlike some more recent '15' (or 'R') rated comedies there are no "dull" patches and no slow bits. It's just laugh, after laugh, after laugh. Be warned though, if you don't like swearing avoid this film as there really is non-stop effing.
The plot, though mildly clichéd is brilliantly executed and is full of clever twists. Sandra Bullock's performance was 5-star and Melissa McCarthy's was no worse. A brilliant duo for a brilliant film. Definitely recommend it!
If this is an example of what Americans consider humor, God help us all. Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock play an "odd couple" law enforcement duo, McCarthy the streetwise trash-talking local Boston cop whose local investigation gets taken over when the FBI sends in the straight-laced college-educated Bullock. What transpires is a train wreck of "situation comedy" material that is repeatedly ruined by thee script-writers' reliance on the cussing and swearing by McCarthy's cop to replace their inability to come up with a good punch line. Bullock Is sent in to track down a major drug lord, and at first the friction between the two works well in setting up the punch-line opportunities, but it soon becomes apparent that their talents are being completely wasted in this flick except for whatever chemistry the two can manage to bring into this disaster. Halfway through the film it's obvious how things are going to end up: the case gets solved, and the pair end up working well enough together that we can expect a sequel if the box office goes well. This review is not being written by a flaming Bible-belt Christian, just a guy who is sick and tired of sitting through "buddy cop" movies that can't live up to the advance billing. The audience I was part of got lots of laughs, but I noticed most of that was coming from elderly ladies who were reacting to the shock value of the foul language coming from McCarthy. They were sitting in groups, so this was apparently a "gals night" outing; my town doesn't have a male strip club, so I guess this is the best they can do. Sandra Bullock has played this character so many times, it's lost its "funny" except that this time she had McCarthy to play off from and it kinda worked. I stayed over to watch "White House Down" for the third time to get my money's worth out of the $5 matinée discount ticket price.
More often than not The Heat is just stupid-funny, which circles us back to McCarthy, motor-mouthing four-letter fury like an operatic aria. She sells Mullins as delightfully unhinged and fairly radiating with rage, and it’s irresistible.
The US Blu-ray features two versions of the film. Next to the R-rated theatrical version, we have an unrated cut that doesn't offer a substantially better film. If you liked the theatrical version, you might enjoy some of the plot extension that the longer cut introduces since they add a little humor but they are not necessary to alter the film's overall impression.
