A group of people are resurrected from their deaths by a mysterious black ball called GANTZ to combat alien criminals hiding on Earth.
High school student Kei Kurono meets up with childhood friend Kato Masaru one day by chance encounter. As the two are in the subway chatting, Kato notices a homeless man on the subway train tracks. Kato goes down on to the tracks to move the man off the tracks and persuades Kei to help. But soon after helping the man, they are hit by a subway train and killed... or maybe not. Immediately after being hit by the train, the two are suddenly in an apartment from which they can't leave, along with some other people who were also in some near death experience. In this apartment there is also a black sphere called Gantz. Kei and the others have to obey Gantz's rules if they want to live. They have to participate in missions in which the objective is to eliminate aliens. But who or what are these aliens? are Kei, Kato and the others alive or dead?
A strange one this, which is confusing right from the start in terms of plot. It all feels a little disjointed, with conversations seeming to start half way through, and finish just as abruptly.
The plot, as far as I can figure it out, is this: Certain people, for various reasons, die before their time. When this happens, some of them are selected and transported to a room with a bunch of other pickees. After hanging around in the room for a while, bewildered, a huge black ball appears. At this point, one of the gathered instructs them that they have to don a suit which is imbued with special powers, and go off to fight an alien(!) Thing is, they have no choice about fighting the alien, as they are transported automatically at a given point in time, at which moment the huge black ball starts counting down an hour - the time they have to dispatch the alien menace.
It's all rather odd, none of the characters are likable in any way with no redeeming features, and it also has possibly the worst title music of any show I have ever heard - a hideous Japanese interpretation of 'jungle' - yet it is strangely compelling, and will keep you watching until the end.
Far from the best anime out there, but still intriguing enough to recommend.
Well, I did enjoy watching Gantz, but.... its painfully slow. In a typical scene, the robot is coming! And someone is about to shoot the gun! Then, the robot is coming! And someone is about to shoot! After that, the robot is coming! And someone is about to shoot it! And the robot is still coming! And someone hasn't shot it yet but they are about to! And here comes the robot! The gun is about to go off! That sums up pretty much every episode, and there must have been at least 30% of this meaningless fill in every episode. These scenes just overstretched the sense of tension to the point of snapping. Plenty of better anime out there.
