When a scientist sent back to the prehistoric era strays off the path he causes a chain of events that alters history in disastrous ways.
2055, Charles Hatton has made a fortune by founding 'Time safari', which offers rich 'big game hunters' short time travels to kill off dinosaurs just before their natural death. When Travis notices the weather and wildlife are not behaving as usual, he consults Dr. Rand, the contractually invisible inventor of the supercomputer which controls the time travel. They soon face 'time waves', each worsening the effects in 2055 of evolutionary distortions, lower lifeforms first. They attempt to identify and rectify the past alteration, but each attempt gets harder in their distorted present.
Im pretty picky when it comes to movies, I cant help but spot inconsistencies and effects problems and it can let the smallest fault ruin an otherwise good movie for me. I end up spending the whole time looking for more issues or I just lose interest because of it.
With this movie though, i knew it would be bad, so my expectations were pretty low. Another reviewer on IMDb said the special effects and acting were so bad that it made the movie good. This combined with a story line and subject matter thats right up my alley, then it had to be good! The movie actually wasn't AS bad as i expected though. Sure the special effects are bad, the acting at times can be way off and the script has some noticeable holes, but i couldn't help but think how much i would have loved this movie when i was a kid.
Watching some of the movies i loved when i was a kid, its obvious that bad acting, bad writing and special effects glitches go unnoticed to kids, what matters is a fun action packed story that doesn't get too weighed down with details, character development and plot. Kids will love this movie because it moves along quickly and has some great action sequences with simple dialogue.
Time travel, guns, dinosaurs, huge bats, sea monsters and big monkey lizard things are all things kids love and when its all set in a futuristic world overrun with killer thorn shooting plants, how could it fail? I don't recall any swearing, nudity, extreme violence or gore, but there may be some scares in there a bit too intense for really young kids.
There's also a lovely lack of typical Hollywood brand name product placement tie-in bulls*** in this movie, which is something i cant stand in movies.
8 Year old boys will eat this one up!
Until I read about the catastrophes associated with "A Sound of Thunder," I was going to call it the cheesiest movie in recent memory. The adapted Ray Bradbury science fiction story about time travel suffered the great floods of 2002 in Prague and lack of money that delayed its release for 2 years. That Renny Harlin (Cutthroat Island) was originally scheduled to direct should have tipped me off to a lowbrow enterprise.
The rear projection is blatantly so; the futuristic city is often modeled; the autos are real toys in chase sequences. The characters who hire Ed Burns to take them back in time to hunt dinosaurs are frequently overacting; the set pieces distinctly function as scene breakers or time wasters, ending up giving nothing to dramatic flow and sequential logic.
I can't find anything good to say other than the butterfly effect is a sound premise that won't be heard in this vehicle. The idea that changing even a minute part of history would affect all subsequent history is worth exploring.
A Sound of Thunder is a whimper and should be sent back in time to the '50's, where poor production values were valued in B movies. In this film there is no satire of the genre, not anything to indicate the filmmakers were even making fun of themselves
The cliché-laden dialogue, schlocky special effects and predictable plot are derivative; the movie is overwrought and lacks suspense.
