For five years the crew of the PALOMINO has ranged through deep space, searching for evidence of alien life--with no result. Then, their mission almost at an end, they discover a giant collapsar--the largest black hole ever encountered--and, drifting perilously near it, is the long-lost legendary starship CYGNUS...Incredibly, the ship is not a lifeless hulk. Its commander--the genius who designed the CYGNUS and planned its epic voyage--still survives, served by a horde of mechanical slaves. But Commander Hans Reinhardt has no desire to be rescued. He has a rendezvous with the incredibly hellish forces of the collapsar--and he plans to take the PALOMINO'S crew along on his doomed adventure.
The crew of the spaceship Palamino stumbles across the ''lost'' ship U.S.S. Cygnus, hovering on the edge of an immense black hole. Once aboard, they find the ship is manned by robots - it's only human inhabitant, one Dr. Hans Reinhardt; an eminent scientist, missing for the past twenty years. His plan - to enter the Black Hole . . . Whether Dr. Reinhardt is a genius or a mad-man, one thing is for sure, he will not be denied his life's dream. What lies beyond the Black Hole? Immortality . . . or, Oblivion . . . ?
I first saw this movie at the drive in when I was four years old. I really enjoyed it then, but I didn't understand what was going on. Now that I am older I know what is going on, but man there are sure a lot of visible strings. It also doesn't have the pop it did back then either. The story is rather interesting as it is a bit like that of the more recent "Event Horizon". A ship that has been missing is found near a black hole. The doctor on the ship is preparing to enter the black hole as part of an experiment. There are a few stars that people know in this one, but no one really big. Anthony Perkins and Ernest Borgnaine are the biggest. Schell is also in it and so is Robert Forster who was in the movie "Alligator". Perkins and Borgnaine aren't really in this one a whole lot though. There are a few fights and other things in this one, as it was probably made because of "Star Wars". The effects though are definitely not the best as this film was probably rushed to be made. Not the best movie in the world, but I could think of worse ways to spend your time.
For such a naked Star Wars riff I think this underrated too. Murky and moody, the Cygnus spaceship where all the action takes place looks like a Gothic cathedral/industrial factory fun-house balanced on the edge of infinity, a gorgeous quantum whirlpool suspended in the heavens like the eye of God. The mad scientist story is rote and the googly eyed robots are a mismatch for the downbeat atmosphere but....the haunted house ghost ship with its huge deserted corridors & hooded monk-bots, the delicious & protracted destruction of the same and that awe inspiring conclusion with towering Mordor spires in tidal waves of fire & brimstone....there's definitely a darker, more visionary & operatic film laying underneath the generic happy meal shell. There's all sorts of exciting directions it could've gone that are only hinted at and its all pre-CGI so it has a certain weight to it, too. That last trip through the threshold could've pushed a lot further into 2001 territory. Like the critics said, it can't decide whether it wants to ape STAR WARS/STAR TREK or go off staring into the abyss. It needed to stop holding back & become the out 'n out horror movie it clearly wanted to be- in space no one can hear you scream! I've read it has a cult following & you can really see why. A very odd family flick, Di$ney could do interesting things despite itself.
An Einstein-Rosen bridge, named after the creators of the theory: Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen, refers to the wormhole inherent in the center of a black hole and is a portal to a mirror universe that exists on the other end of a black hole. But there has been revisions to their theory through the years.
The first revision to this was the Schwarzschild solution, stating that a black hole was a static, non-revolving object, and that the center of a black hole was a single point, meaning that an object caught in that kind of black hole would undoubtedly be crushed when it reached the center, by the infinite gravity contained therein. This revision gives the impression that the Einstein-Rosen bridge would never be a scientific fact.
The second revision came in 1963 when Roy Kerr devised his solution for the Einstein-Rosen bridge equation, which was that if a star was rotating whenever it became a black hole, the center wouldn't become a single point. Instead, it would create a rotating black hole (the kind seen in the film) and there would be a ring instead of a single point at the center. Therefore it could still be possible to traverse through the black hole and emerge through to the other side, under certain circumstances.
The first condition of this is that the object must be travelling faster than the speed of light, in order to prevent being crushed by the finite gravity of the black hole, as detailed by Kerr's solution. The second condition is that the object going through the black hole must have the trajectory of approaching it from the front, head on, instead of the side. Any object approaching the black hole from the side would be crushed by the gravity of the hole itself, which would still be at an infinite state at that point around the black hole. Any object meeting these two conditions would, theoretically, make it through the Einstein-Rosen bridge and reach the universe on the other side of the black hole.
In the film The Black Hole,because the probe ship met those two conditions, it successfully made the voyage through, while the Cygnus, since it didn't meet one or both of the conditions, was crushed and destroyed at the exterior of the black hole itself.
