As his wedding day approaches, Ben heads to Miami with his soon-to-be brother-in-law James to bring down a drug dealer who's supplying the dealers of Atlanta with product. The RIDE ALONG 2 sequel picks up about a year after our heroes' last adventure. Plans for a quick trip to Miami go bad. With the wedding upcoming, James reluctantly takes Ben with him to Miami to follow up on a lead connected to a drug ring case he's been trying to crack. In Miami, they meet Maya, a no-BS homicide detective who lets them know Miami is her turf. They also encounter AJ, a shady cocky computer hacker who reveals evidence that implicates a well-respected local businessman, the wealthy Antonio Pope. Pope harbors a vicious streak and rules South Florida's drug trade. If Ben and James can convince the authorities that Pope is a brutal crime boss they'll stop his spree. If they fail, well there may not be a wedding after all. Sometimes I go back and re-read my old movie reviews to see how I've progressed as a reviewer, to learn what I can do better or to make updates. It's an especially useful exercise when I'm reviewing the sequel to a movie that I reviewed earlier, and now I've been writing full-length reviews long enough that I have that opportunity more often. When I re-read a review, sometimes I realize that I could've done a better job, and other times I find that I hit the nail on the head the first time. This is one of those times.

Exactly two years to the day after I saw the cop comedy "Ride Along", I saw "Ride Along 2" (PG-13, 1:41). In my 2014 review, I complained that the original featured a Kevin Hart who was doing little more than "trying to update (Eddie) Murphy's signature high-pitched, motor-mouthed, role-playing Axel Foley character". Hart does the same thing in this movie – and the script (written by two of the four guys who wrote the original) goes even further into "Beverly Hills Cop" territory by taking a police detective (Ice Cube's character) from his home base to a seaside resort location where he partners with local cops and finds himself pursuing a drug dealer who is masquerading as a pillar of the community. The main difference is, in "Ride Along 2", we get two cops taking that road trip – one doing the real detecting – and one providing the comic relief. Eddie Murphy did both in his BHC movies, but the division of labor in "Ride Along 2" works a bit better than it did in its predecessor (unlike the case of "Beverly Hills Cop 2").

This film picks up about a year after the last one left off with former high school security guard Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) itching to become a real cop, while planning on marrying Angela (Tika Sumpter), the sister of hard-nosed Atlanta detective James Payton (Ice Cube). As the sequel begins, Ben has successfully joined the APD, but is still in his probationary period. He is deep into planning his wedding to Angela, with the help of aggressive and stubborn wedding planner Sherri Shepherd, with whom he clashes as he's more involved in the wedding preparations than most guys would be. James is working with Ben on actual cases, but doesn't think Ben is up to advancing to the rank of detective.

When James comes up with a lead that ties an Atlanta drug dealer to a Miami computer hacker called AJ (Ken Jeong), Angela talks James into letting Ben ride along too – both to get him out of her hair one week before the wedding – and so Ben can try, once and for all, to show James what he can do as a cop. As they check in with the local Miami police, they meet tough homicide detective Maya (Olivia Munn) who ends up working with them as they pursue their leads. James and Ben catch up with the nerdy AJ who has information pointing to Miami businessman Antonio Pope (Benjamin Bratt) as a drug kingpin.

Even though Hart seems to be copying the Eddie Murphy template as the movie places it back into the "Beverly Hills Cop" formula doesn't mean "Ride Along 2" doesn't have its moments. Ben is still pretty manic in his approach to policing, but he's more of a threat to himself than he is to society, and James is still highly skeptical of Ben's potential, but they do start to jell a little this time around. They both have the ability to make us laugh (as does Jeong), but many of the jokes and gags still fall flat. Ben's obsession with video games is well-used as part of the plot and in a great sight gag, but the movie's plot points feel very contrived and as if they only exist to get us from one semi-humorous moment to the next. The sequel's bigger budget gives us more explosions and miscellaneous mayhem, but the characterizations beyond the lead characters are one-dimensional. In its opening night, "Ride Along 2" did slightly better than its predecessor and I'm giving this sequel a grade that matches that accomplishment. I deemed 2014's "Ride Along" as worthy of a "C+", slightly below what I consider "recommendation land". "Ride Along 2" gets a "B" – a mild recommendation. At this rate, I may be raving about this franchise by the time we get to "Ride Along 4"... or not. Time will tell. The original "Ride Along"'s first mistake was settling the merits of its screenplay on the charisma and abilities of both of its lead performers, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, respectively. Mixing Ice Cube's trademark meanness and Kevin Hart's zany, over-the-top energy presented a dichotomy destined for screwball circumstances, but the remainder of the film was simply a cut-and-paste effort, mixing the best elements of "Rush Hour" with a lackluster crime caper formula and fairly uninspired humor.

Along comes "Ride Along 2," yet another middling effort from two comedians who have so much potential that, I presume, is going to waste in this incredibly poor franchise. This time, James and Ben (Cube and Hart) reunite to travel to Miami to find a drug dealer named Troy (Glen Powell), but in order to do so, they must beat the information out of a dweeby hacker named A.J. (Ken Jeong). A.J. reveals that he does a lot of work for Antonio Pope (Benjamin Bratt), a filthy rich investor who keeps his many illegal operations on the down-low.

James and Ben team up with Maya Cruz (Olivia Munn), a homicide investigator who admires their charisma, even if she finds Ben a bit too obnoxious at times. In addition, Ben, who is pining to become a certified detective in the force, needs to get back home to wed James' sister. The result is one-hundred minutes of four actors, who have proved their talent in many other pictures, run around like cats chasing mice in search of bad guys, good leads, and some decent punchlines. They wind up finding the first two items.

"Ride Along 2" is astonishingly inert and almost entirely uninteresting despite all that's going on. Its fatal flaw besides another unremarkable crime story is mistaking obnoxiousness and loud action sequences and shouting matches for real humor. The cast, particularly Kevin Hart, feels the more they run around and shout at the top of their lungs, the funnier they will be. Hart in particular finds success with this formula during his many stand up comedy specials (according to a brief trailer before "Ride Along 2," we'll get to see yet another theatrical special from Hart called "Kevin Hart: What Now?" later this year), but when confined to a film where he's supposed to create a character we like and sympathize for, that motive gets lost in all the cacophonous yelling.

With that, some of the creative decisions on behalf of director Tim Story and the writing team of Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi are just bizarre, most specifically, the film's major car chase. In an early scene of the film - and a humorous one, at that - Ben is seen playing a "Grand Theft Auto"-style video-game, racing a vehicle and dodging other cars, pedestrians, and police roadblocks with great skill and reactions. The major car chase in the film, upon Ben taking the wheel in order to dodge violent criminals shooting at them so James can fire back, switches back between the traditional style of a cinematic car chase to the style of a video-game, equipped with a map in the corner and third-rate video-game graphics. The result is a visual mess that completely throws the placement and the continuity off to the point where it's like playing a laggy video-game in terms of trying to keep up with the action.

God bless Olivia Munn for taking time out of her presumably busy schedule to play with children on the set of this film. Munn is the only performer here with any conception of subtlety; consider her faint but noticeable eyebrow-raise when Ben insults her to her face after being completely and totally shaken to the core by her. While Munn is more concerned with restraint, Cube gives his usual schtick, Hart runs around in circles exhausting himself, and Jeong is nearly intolerable, reciting his lines either by shouting or by embellishing a screechy dialect.

The "Ride Along" franchise reminds me a lot of the "Taken" franchise in that it was never destined to be anything more than dime-store fare for the drab month of American mainstream releases in January. It did, however, get lucky thanks to advertising and promoting its star-power so much so that it became a huge hit, and alas, spawned a couple sequels to continuously capitalize on the persistent mediocrity of the franchise. In that respect, "Ride Along 2" succeeds and lives up to the low-bar already set by a forgettable film. Ride Along 2 is the movie equivalent of a cover band. We’ve seen it all before, and often in much better films. a5c7b9f00b
