Ten years before Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise, the USS Discovery discovers new worlds and lifeforms as one Starfleet officer learns to understand all things alien. When you touch something sacred, you just have to be aware that there may be resistance, and there is.

First of all, it seems that this isn't the world of Star Trek that most of us know and love - this feels to be (but it's not) a J.J. Abrams' reality and that's the basic wrongdoing to the franchise. The reboot movies were mediocre SF movies, but definitely not Star Trek movies. There was a lot of laser-shooting-things and lens flares with words like 'Star Fleet', 'Kirk', 'Warp' and such, but there was not enough Star Trek in them.

The same goes for the 'Discovery'. You know you're watching Star Trek not because you feel it, you're told so.

Star Trek was always a space opera that showed us the world of futuristic wonders of the almost idyllic society that is working towards something bigger than itself, trying to be a great web that binds the universe into one multicultural being in a never-ending story.

Star Trek Discovery takes us into a different place. It's dark and by so it strips the franchise of its true beauty and magic. And it was done many times but what comes to mind is Stargate: Universe.

Moreover, the series is incoherent in many ways and tries to stand out as a modern creation that covers trends and battles of today's society.

We have Michael Burnham, a black human woman with a male name raised by a Vulcans. She is revered by her captain, she's her first officer and is respected by all. But when the things get real Michael doesn't even try to use her Vulcan logic and martial arts training, not mentioning of Star Fleet's protocols. First, she says - 'We cannot kill the Klingon, there will be war', then she just let's loose, sets her gun from 'Stun' to 'Kill' and starts that war. And as she looks at her captain's body she doesn't run to it to beam with the body, she just acts like she's an Ensign, and again forgets her Vulcan training and Star Fleet's protocols. This behavior sticks with her and repeats on, and on again. Highly illogical.

We have Klingons, who are a way to say 'hey, there's a problem with terrorism all over the world, let's go with it'. This holy-don't- touch-my-artifact-you-infidel way to go with the Klingons is kind of ridiculous. As for the looks of them - it would fit if it'd be a future, past the Voyager series - we could say that their disease has progressed and hey, they're now that ugly. Still, this is not the biggest problem with their creation.

We have Captain Gabriel Lorca, the dark 'can't literally look into the light' man, who suffers horrors of his past. The darkest Fleet Commander we have seen as one of the main protagonists (or at least close to one).

We have Cadet Sylvia Tilly, a socially awkward girl with big dreams that suits the purpose of being a mirror for youngster socially awkward geeks. They've probably said, 'If we think there's need to satisfy some of the audience, we'll do it, cause we don't exclude'. We have some fighting against animal cruelty, despite the fact that at first, no one is really into it. Did they think 'well, the creature obviously suffers but we'll leave it until the next episode where we unbind all the knots, they won't notice'? And yes, in Star Trek, the animal cruelty of this sort probably would not exist. Note that eating meat that wasn't replicated was a barbaric act. And the creature alone - attacking in the name of defending itself? That would be a clear sign of a quite high intelligence there.

We have a black and white gay couple that, yet again, is just there to throw more diversity. Truly a cherry on the top at the end of the 5th episode.

Don't get me wrong - having a black, male named woman, that is pro- animal rights, fighting against an evil religious empire alongside socially awkward and black and white gay people is not bad, but it just doesn't feel like Star Trek.

Of course, there are other things that don't fit like the technology, ships, weapons and so on, that many people pointed out - and those are important things for Trekkie's and important things for the continuity of the series.

You, authors and actors, have entered huge shoes that are hard to fill and you have failed of doing so. To make a good Star Trek movie or series, you don't need to boldly go where no one was before but you have to take one step a time, know what is to know about the created world and use it to your purpose. This is a franchise that, when used wisely, will defend itself - you just have to steer between the dots and connect them.

The sad thing is that Seth MacFarlane's 'The Orville' is more Star Trek than the Star Trek Discover is. There's been a lot of people dismissing Discovery out of hand, but having done a recent rewatch of all of the series, the first 8 episodes have stood up better than any other live action Trek series' first season to date.

Is the casting "political"? Maybe. Certainly no more so than that of TOS, where Roddenberry pushed limits in terms of not just race and gender, but also in his inclusion of a heroic and proud Russian character working alongside Americans at a point in history when Russia was unequivocally The Enemy. In short, Trek's always been political, and it's never been afraid to ignore realism (or its own canon) in the name of philosophical exploration. If that's what draws you to Trek (as it does for me), Discovery's worth checking out. The series will take place approximately 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series and therefore be set around the 2250s. Series creator Bryan Fuller has stated that the series will take place in the Prime Universe (in which The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and the first ten feature films take place, and not the so-called "Kelvin Universe" in which Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond all take place). a5c7b9f00b
