There's a mystery afoot in Gotham City, and Batman must go toe-to-toe with a mysterious vigilante, who goes by the name of Red Hood. Subsequently, old wounds reopen and old, once buried memories come into the light.
Batman faces his ultimate challenge as the mysterious Red Hood takes Gotham City by firestorm. One part vigilante, one part criminal kingpin, Red Hood begins cleaning up Gotham with the efficiency of Batman, but without following the same ethical code. Killing is an option. And when the Joker falls in the balance between the two, hard truths are revealed and old wounds are reopened.
This movie is a celebration of what Batman represents, a warrior in a constant unstoppable war between the good and the evil. This movie depicts the invisible aspects of this war, the turmoil, fear, sorrow, and sadness this war brings to those involved in it. The movie very effectively depicts the heavy burden the good side place on you, and the pleasures that evil side promises you. The Batman face the biggest challenge in the form of Red Hood - a character killing the members of the crime gang in Gotham city and overtaking their business. The story has been exceptionally told, the animation superb, voices good and the climax superb. If you are a true Batman fan then you will never forget this movie.
Batman: Under The Red Hood is an adaptation of two stories of the Batman comic books - starting with "A Death In The Family" and ending on "Under the Hood". Now, neither of these story arcs could be described as the best of Batman, and they involve a retcon that many fans hated, and a character (Jason Todd) that readers loathed so much, back in 1988 they attempted a voting poll to get him removed from Batman's comic book. Yet, for some reason, DC went ahead and decided to turn it into a movie.
Why? Simple: there's a lot of violence involved in the storyline. Bombs, beatings, stabbings, shootings, you name it. Normally, I'd appreciate all of this in a cartoon, but this time it's blatantly clear that they're just trying to squeeze in as much violence as possible into the seventy-minute tale, trying, unsuccessfully, to follow the steps of "The Dark Knight". And let's face it, Director Brandon Vietti is no Chris Nolan.
The resultant film is C-list at best, with below-average performances from the voice actors (even Jensen Ackles - a very good actor in live-action, fails to deliver as The Red Hood; in fact, the only well-done character was The Joker), over-the-top music, improbable action sequences and some truly lame one-liners from Nightwing. A story that should've been character-driven is pushed by plot-point after plot-point, making it lag and limp along for even its short length.
In short: it fails. On every level as a movie. Be aware that casual cartoon-watchers are going to be filled with praise for this film for its depiction of violence, calling it "dark and original" or whatever, but there's nothing new to be seen here. Just a studio trying to cash in on a franchise while it can, as studios always do.
If you're the kind of guy who's never seen actual violence in a cartoon, you might like this. But if you're used to works like "Spawn", "Spicy City", etc, this movie comes off as nothing new.
