Sarah Ashburn, an FBI agent, is extremely ambitious and has her eye on a promotion, but she doesn't get along with her co-workers. She is sent to Boston to uncover the identity of an elusive drug lord, Mr. Larkin, by tracking down his proxy, Rojas, and is told that she'll have a good shot at the promotion if she finds Larkin. When she arrives in Boston, she learns that Larkin has been eliminating his competition and taking over their operations. She learns that Rojas is in Boston PD custody and goes to see him to ask him what he knows about Larkin, but is warned that the cop who arrested Rojas, Shannon Mullins, is very territorial, and she is not exactly sociable. When the two meet they don't get along. When Mullins learns why Ashburn is in Boston, she decides to find Larkin herself. Ashburn is told by her boss to work with Mullins, but it won't be easy because Ashburn does things by the book while Mullins does things her way.

Director of the wildly successful and outrageously provocative Bridesmaids, Paul Feig, reunites with rapidly risen comedienne Melissa McCarthy and tags along the malleable Sandra Bullock for The Heat, a lighthearted romp that brings with it the director's penchant for border-pushing humour, but fails to land all of its many, many punches.
The story opens on uptight, career-driven Special Agent Ashburn's (Bullock) takedown of a couple of low-life nobodies, but when the case thickens, she is sent across the country on the hunt for a ruthless crime lord. Unbeknownst to her, she is paired up with the foul-mouthed Mullins (McCarthy), a streetwise Bostonian who has no problems taking extreme measures to keep her beloved community safe.
More so with comedies than perhaps any other genre, an excess of trailers runs the risk of giving away the film's best moments in a wry attempt to get people through the door. Refreshingly, The Heat is not one of those films. Courtesy of an innumerable number of F-bombs and sharply sexual humour, TV spots have been restricted to advertising only the most mundane of jokes in promos, which proves rather misleading.
This is no take-the-whole-family-plus-grandma day at the movies. A merciless barrage of crude and nasty comedy spews forth from the pen of writer Katie Dippold (Parks & Recreation), helped along in no small part thanks to energetic chemistry between the leading pair. Bullock and McCarthy do just enough to separate their relationship from every other buddy cop film ever, peppering their constant criticism of each other with a believable friendship that never crosses into corniness.
Despite this, the film lacks the real laugh-out-loud moments that all comedies persistently try to outdo each other with. Most of the film should have you chuckling (much of the physical comedy and the duo's drunken montage come to mind), but never roaring in your seat. What opens on a promising note eventually- or perhaps, inevitably- descends into vapidity, making for a fun and breezy experience during its runtime, but one that loses all rewatchability not long after.

The Heat is the second starring vehicle for Melissa McCarthy of 2013 following Identity Thief. Luckily, I enjoyed this movie better, but maybe you can thank Sandra Bullock for that. This is your typical R-rated modern comedy and buddy cop film. I actually like how they used females in the lead, which you don't often see in cop films. There is a good amount of action, lots of cussing, and a decent amount of humor. Though there are some jokes that fall flat and the screenplay is good, but if not a little predictable.
Paul Feig, the director of 2011's smash-hit Bridesmaids, returns behind the camera to direct the story of how an uptight, by-the-book FBI woman Sarah Ashburn and foul-mouthed, crazy Boston detective Shannon Mullins reluctantly agree to take down a drug lord together and trying to become friends in the process.
The acting really isn't too bad here. If you are not a fan of McCarthy's antics, you should probably stay away. She gets really crazy, but I really liked it. Sandra Bullock is an unusual pairing for McCarthy, but she does a great job as the straight-laced FBI woman.
Overall, The Heat is your typical buddy cop film which stays true to formula and does the bold move in switching genders for the main roles. While it's predictable, it's still a blast to watch because of the talents of Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. It would be nice to see some sort of sequel in the future. I rate this film 8/10.
Give it up for Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. You’ll never see them work harder at a comedy than in The Heat, a stumbling, aggressively loud and profane cop buddy picture where they struggle to wring “funny” out of a script that isn’t.
The US Blu-ray features two versions of the film. Next to the R-rated theatrical version, we have an unrated cut that doesn't offer a substantially better film. If you liked the theatrical version, you might enjoy some of the plot extension that the longer cut introduces since they add a little humor but they are not necessary to alter the film's overall impression. In total the Unrated Version runs approx. three minutes longer than the Theatrical Version. a5c7b9f00b
