In order to get out of hock with mobster Billy Walker, restaraunteur-turned-"retrieval expert" Beck has to go down to Brazil and retrieve Billy's ne'er-do-well archaeologist-wannabe son Travis, who is searching for an ancient gold idol called the Gato del Diablo. This idol is prized by not only the local population as the path to their salvation, but by Cornelius Hatcher, slavedriving operator of the Helldorado mining town who oppresses said population in the name of profits, and Hatcher just won't let Beck leave with Travis.
A tough aspiring chef is hired to bring home a mobster's son from the Amazon but becomes involved in the fight against an oppressive town operator and the search for a legendary treasure.
Biggest thing that I don't understand about this movie.. why do they make a minor character who obviously speaks with a Scottish accent an Irish character? I've never been to either place, but the Scottish accent on Declan is pretty strong. But then he flies an Irish flag and has a four-leaf clover painted on his plane. Odd choice I think.
Second biggest thing about this movie, why were there so many script holes? The Rock wants to open a restaurant, but why? He hates guns, and frequently says this, but they never give any reason why? There are more holes in this plot than in a block of Swiss cheese.
The digital effects are cheesy and obvious.
This movie has its funny moments, but for me they were few and far between. This movie has all action and no plot. If that's your cup of tea, then you'll love it. Otherwise, skip it.
A much better role for the Rock. A damn good action flick too.
The Rock is electrifying in his role as Beck, and he takes on a memorable performance this time. Also it's nice to see a small torch passing here in this movie. Arnie walks by saying, "Have Fun". Meaning enjoy your ride your the next big action star. The Rock does show a sense of humour in this film too. Not to mention he wont hesitate to do a spine buster and Rock Bottom either. As it fits so well. Sean William Scott is the perfect pick for Beck's mission. As his mission proves not to be so easy. Not to mention it was so hialrious seeing Seann trying to act tough infront of the Rock and he gets smashed twice. The girl was hot. And she played a dirty trick on both, but it wasn't too bad. As for Christopher Walken he played the perfect bad guy.
The other thing about this action flick, besides the great laughs, and action, and wrestling, is the story. The storyline of the film caught me in.
Beck(Rock), before retring as a hitman must do one more mission. he must pick up his bosses son, Travis(Sean William Scott). However Travis is in pursuit of a golden monkey. Beck is left with no choice but to help him out. And Christopher Walken's Character(forgot who he played) is after Travis, the golden monkey, and becomes in pursuit of Beck soon after Beck gets involved in Sean's little scheme.
Cements the Rock's status as a contempo action hero with a bigscreen future.
In Great Britain, this movie had been cut in order to achieve the more lucrative BBFC12 rating, however, only the uncut US Theatrical Version was released on DVD (tagged as "Director's Cut"). The later BD release turned out to be a bad surprise: despite the BBFC15 rating only the shortened BBFC12 version could be found on the disc!
