Transformers crash land on present day Earth and inadvertently cause a technological revolution. They wake up 50 years later in a world where robots are used in everyday life. StarScream arrives looking for their AllSpark. I'll start off by saying I've been an active Transformers fan for years, not someone who watched G1 as a kid and then forgot about TFs until the recent live-action movie came out (In fact, I actually hated the movie, as both a Transformers fan and a fan of movies in general). I'm 22 years old, so I was just a couple of years too late to catch G1 when it first aired (although I now own every episode), and although I had seen a couple of episodes of G1 when it reran as G2, I really became a fan of the franchise with Beast Wars. Since then, I've watched at least some of every TF show, Japanese ones included. Beast Wars (especially the second and third seasons) is my favorite show to date, not because it was the first one I watched, but because the story lines, character development, and voice acting achieved a level of depth, emotion and overall quality which has been unmatched in TF cartoons before or since.

With that being said, I was a bit skeptical going into this show. The last few shows left a lot to be desired, and the odd designs for this one were a bit of a departure from traditional Transformers. Still, I did my best to approach this show with an open mind (after all, many people initially dismissed my favorite TF series because of the changes it made to the franchise), and I was pleasantly surprised. The designs, while a bit jarring at first, are something you'll get used to surprisingly fast. The pacing is nice and the voice acting is the best it's been in years (due largely to this being made for American audiences rather than dubbed over from Japanese), especially Starscream. Since Chris Latta's death, nobody has really been able to fill the role well (though considering his excellent work as Cobra Commander in the '90s I've long said that Scott McNeil would do a fine job), until now. Tom Kenney totally nails the Starscream voice, and it's really a shame that the character hasn't been seen since the pilot (though I have little doubt he'll show up again eventually). The script quality varies a bit from episode to episode, but even at its worst it's better than anything we've seen since the Beast era.

As good as the show is, it's not without its flaws. The biggest flaw at the moment (keep in mind, it's still fairly early in the show's run) is the villains. Transformers has always been about two warring factions, Autobot vs. Decepticon (or, in the Beast-era, Maximal vs. Predacon/Vehicon). In this show, the Autobots have yet to face more than one 'con at a time (even when the Decepticon ship came in the pilot, Megatron was the only one they actually fought face to face), and half the time their enemy is human. Granted, Megatron is often pulling the strings of whatever enemy they may be facing, but so far the Transformer presence on the villains' side has been severely lacking, which is a shame since the episodes where they fight a Cybertronian enemy (be it a Decepticon or the Dinobots) are clearly the strongest of the bunch. No matter what powers a human enemy may possess, it's sort of hard to make him seem like a significant threat to five giant robots. Hopefully once the Decepticons arrive in force (preferably sooner rather than later), this issue will be remedied. The other major issue with the show is the tone, which skews a bit too much toward the kiddy side. Granted, this is a show intended for kids, and it's certainly no kiddier than the last few shows, but honestly, it's still a valid complaint. The people making this show are clearly aware that adult fans watch the show as well (as evidenced by all the G1 references), and could easily make it a bit more mature without alienating the kids (ie Beast Wars).

In conclusion, I encourage you to give this show a chance if you are at all interested, and keep an open mind; you may be pleasantly surprised. Granted, it's not be the best Transformers show ever, but it's far from the worst. Yes, I know, some people hate the artstyle. That alone does not make a show crap, nor does it not being just like the original show. Have people who compare it to G1 actually seen the original since the 80's? Because it really wasn't that good as a show. Fun and entertaining, yes, but not good.

It astounds me to this day that people think Transformers Animated is water-down, child friendly crap. Sure, the first season takes a bit to get going. But it's worth it when you get to the third season, which features mature/dark storytelling, legitimate stakes, and on-screen character death- all things that the cartoon that aired after it, PRIME, failed to do properly.

I could write a whole novel about how this show is actually really good, but instead I'll just highly recommend you give it a watch for more than 3 minutes. Nohow. It references it in many ways, but it takes place in a completely separate universe. In some way, yes; in some ways, no. It was marketed towards a slightly younger audience than most Transformers shows, thus it has a bigger emphasis on comedy and characters not acting super serious, especially in the beginning of the series. At the same time, it had a lot more firm grasp on continuity, backstories and character development than your average kids' cartoon, and lightly touched upon many considerably mature themes, such as the effects of war, responsibility towards others, doing what you feel right against authority orders, and it also showed the wrongness of a politically and morally corrupt society. Arguably, it also carried the message not to be prejudiced against other people just because they are different.

There are also hundreds of in-jokes and homages that younger kids wouldn't get, and some adult fans have fun in finding these. Do note that many staff members behind the cartoon were fans of Transformers (and other popular franchises) themselves, and used their knowledge to hide as many gags into it as possible. Several obscure references and cameos can only be caught by hard-core fans.

As for the art style looking cartoony, less complicated-looking characters are easier to draw and animate, and also allow for more fluid movements. Rumor also has it that Hasbro deliberately wanted to use this drawing style, in case the live action Transformers movies failed, to distance itself from their style. Those clips form a history reel that the characters watch in the show, and are meant as a treat for older Transformers fans. Most younger kids wouldn't be able to recognize those scenes. Keep in mind that this cartoon takes place in another universe where the young Optimus hasn't become a great leader yet. His low rank is explained in his backstory:

During an exploration mission on an alien planet, his team lost one of their members, for which he took responsibility. This has lead to him being kicked out of the Elite Guard Academy. There is no definite answer.

A seemingly logical explanation is that Hasbro (the company that owns Transformers and by extension, this series) wanted to have full control over its cartoon, because Cartoon Network (the channel that aired the show) was constantly holding it back in favor of its own productions, and was also opposed to it receiving a third season.

Another explanation could be that Hasbro wanted to put more focus on the promotion of its then-upcoming Revenge of the Fallen movie and tie-in toyline. Yes. They can be seen in crowd shots later on. Originally, when aired on Cartoon Network, some of them got cropped out of the screen, but when the HUB re-aired the series in widescreen, they became visible. Most are, but a few are completely new characters who haven't appeared in previous Transformers cartoons or comic books. These are Lugnut, Lockdown and, most importantly, Bulkhead. All of them have proved to be popular enough to be included into other Transformers stories, and now they all have their own places in Transformers canon. Likewise, they all received toys in other Transformers figure lines. Yes. In total, this means he has five eyes. Unfortunately, we never learn Sari's true origins. It is heavily implied that she originated from the Transformer Protoforms one of the ships had been carrying, although it is unclear how she got to Earth and how she gained Techno-organic properties. This would have been explained in the canceled fourth season. AUTOBOTS

In the Japanese opening theme of the show, a cloaked mystery villain appears briefly, though who he is, no one knows. He doesn't look like any character from the series. In the second, re-edited Japanese opening, a duplicate of Blackout appears, resembling Grindor in his coloration, however no such character shows up in the series either. Likewise, the opening animation shows the black and red colored Soundwave (resembling Soundblaster) as a separate character from Soundwave, however in the show, "Soundblaster" only appears in a virtual-reality simulation. 497e39180f
