Tugboat passengers take refuge from a storm in a seemingly abandoned Russian intelligence post. They soon discover that the crew was murdered by aliens who think of humans as a virus that must be exterminated. The storm doesn't go away, and they find themselves stuck with the aliens with only two options: to fight or to die.
A ghostly ship looms silently ahead as the crippled, ocean-going, salvage tug Sea Star approaches. The Sea Star crew, their ship slowly sinking, has sought refuge in the eerie calm of the eye of a typhoon to make repairs and hopefully avert disaster. But something's terribly wrong. The ship, a Russian science vessel bristling with high-tech radar, electronics and other wonders, appears to be deserted. Unfortunately for the crew of the Sea Star, nothing could be further from the truth. Shelter from the storm turns into terror on board as they find themselves stalked by a mutating alien life form that has traveled across time and space, an energy force unlike any in the universe. It is powerful. Intelligent. And it has found the perfect planet to inhabit. Now, in order to survive, it must destroy the one threat to its existence: a virus called man.
"Virus", brings to the screen the story of a crew whose ship is badly damaged when struck by a typhoon in the Pacific, as it stumbles across a seemingly abandoned Russian ship. Things get a bit more complicated when they are introduced to the ship's new occupants... Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Sutherland, William Baldwin, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The plot is full of holes. Once the computer comes on, the first thing it does is sink the American ship, which means it is still stranded in the ocean. It has apparently read all the Russian computers, and does not realize that if it keeps sinking ships, they will just sink it. Also the Russian navy would send a destroyer to sink it if they lost contact and found Americans on it. The director apparently forgot he was on a ship, and it builds a machine for itself as big as a room, but manages to move through the doorway and gangways of a ship without leaving a clue. Once the Americans turn back on the power., all the little robots that it built out of parts of Computers and ship come to life, and start building more of the little monsters. Yet two of the Americans, watch this to find the robots antics funny rather then completely strange. They are attacked by half man, half machine robots, who have the worst aim possible. In corridors and rooms it fires off magazine after magazine of machine gun fire, and hits nothing.
The dialogue is mostly very good with tension build up and intense lines. Action scenes however, loaded with special effects and saturated with a coarse taste of humour, subtracts from the atmosphere and status of the film considerably. Towards the end, the plot becomes untenable as it twists and turns into the more and more ridiculous. The Story line I found was ultimately very weak and character development practically non-existent. I felt technically the film was well made and transitions sound, but the directing was a bit of a let down.

I just saw this mess on Starz. I'm surprised the producers actually got Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Baldwin, and (most surprisingly) Donald Sutherland to participate. The reels turn and the rip-offs pile up: Star Trek, Runaway, Aliens. Watching finally became unbearable when the protagonists found they could "talk" to the virus-infected mega-robot. I think this is the kind of dreck that gets dumped almost immediately from first-run theaters in the US to in-flight movies on third-world airlines. But, Donald Sutherland?!?!
"Deep Rising" was one of the worst movies of 1998. Virus is easily worse.
In the eye of typhoon Leiah, somewhere in the south Pacific, the crew of the salvage tug Sea Star—Captain Robert Everton (Donald Sutherland), navigator Kit Foster (), chief engineer Steve Baker (William Baldwin), first mate J.W. Woods (Marshall Bell), and deckhands Squeaky (Julio Oscar Mechoso), Richie (Sherman Augustus), and Hiko (Cliff Curtis)—come across an abandoned Russian research vessel, the Akademik Vladislav Volkov. loaded with high-tech electronics. Thinking that they will be able to make 300 million dollars by claiming the derelict, they board it, only to find a sole survivor, chief science officer Nadia Vinogradiya (Joanna Pacula), who babbles about the vessel being taken over by an alien life form. She's not wrong. The movie is based on a comic book, also named Virus, written by American novelist Chuck Pfarrer, drawn by Canadian aratist Howard Cobb, and first published by Dark Horse in 1995. Pfarrer said in an interview that, when he wrote the original story as a script in the early 1990s, the special effects for a film adaptation wouldn't have been possible, so he sold the script to Dark Horse as a comic. The story was later adapted for the movie by Pfarrer and screenwriter Dennis Feldman. Just before Richie dies, he informs Steve that he has worked out a way to get off the ship. He instructs Steve to get to the missile room and he'll understand. Meanwhile, Foster and Nadia are confronted by the cyborg, who shows them that he has found the detonator. Saying, "Check mate," he crushes it with his claw. Nadia yells at Foster to get to the main deck and get off the ship so she can tell people what has happened. The cyborg grabs Nadia, so she shoots a flare gun at nearby gas tanks, killing herself. Unfortunately, the cyborg survives and continues to follow Foster. Rushing to get to the main deck, Foster runs into Steve. They shut themselves up in the missile room where Steve sees an ejection seat—but rigged only for one. Steve forces Foster into the seat and orders her to eject, but she refuses to go without him. As the cyborg breaks down the door into the room, Foster grabs Steve, pulls him down on top of her, and ejects them both. As Foster and Steve are shot out over the water, a trailing cable pulls the detonation pins from a pile of thermite grenades, blowing up the ship.
