"Popeye" Doyle travels to Marseille to find Alain Charnier, the drug smuggler who eluded him in New York.
New York narcotics detective Popeye Doyle follows the trail of the French connection smuggling ring to France where he teams up with the gendarmes to hunt down the ringleader.
This is one of the few cases in which a sequel really adds something to the first film without taking something away from it. With uncompromising harshness Frankenheimer plunges into the black hole that comes with loss of self-control and self-respect, and it is stunning to witness Gene Hackman's performance as his Popeye Doyle is being forced into drug addiction himself. Now if only more people could see how important FC II is in completing the first picture! Together they form one of the most potent, stylish and yes: horrifying double-features imaginable.
The French Connection was a great film and stood well enough on its own. Its sequel, therefore, was wholly unnecessary and only served two functions: to further humanise Popeye Doyle and to punish Charnier for escaping at the end of the first film.
This film was about a half hour too long (the first movie clipped along at a good pace) and dragged in certain parts, most notably the withdrawal scene. Admittedly a good film, with an excellent performance from Hackman, The French Connection II serves no narrative purpose other than to satiate an audience upset at the ending of the first movie.
Pierre Nicoli (Charnier's henchman), Sal Boca (Charnier's buyer) and Bill Mulderig (FBI agent) were all killed in The French Connection; in the same film, Mulderig says he holds Doyle responsible for the death of a police officer in an earlier case ("the last time you were dead certain, we had a dead cop"); it is not clear who the fifth is.
