A modern day vampire tale about a very beautiful French vampire named Marie. Marie is a vampire, unlike any other as she only feeds on bad people who do bad things. Sex and blood are her main course, and one night she goes for Italian. When she feeds on a ruthless crime boss named Sal "The Shark" Macelli, she is discovered by an undercover cop, and does not finish him off in order to prevent him from turning. Unfortunately, Macelli wakes up very confused and extremely thirsty...for blood. Now, Marie and her newfound lover must stop Macelli and his gang of vampires.
Marie, a female vampire with a conscience, decides to restrict her feeding requirements to the violent Pittsburgh gangsters who are at large in the city. Marie's victims become vampires themselves if she fails to permanently immobilise them, so when this happens, the gangsters become a serious problem which she has to fix.
After a series of gang battles in New York, an undercover cop inside the local mafia finds that a vampiress targeting the gang has turned his boss into a creature like her and making the remaining members into vampires, forcing them to team up to put an end to the reign of destruction.
For the most part, this was pretty decent for these kinds of vampire films. Most of this is based on a great atmosphere that gives it a fun factor as simply dripping with cheese. It's mostly specific to the middle where the powers of the vampires are being discovered which is fun to see those scenes as it's the extraordinary happening under normal conditions as it's new for non-vampires to be acting in this way, and that leads to some comedic, over-the-top moments. Seeing them go crazy after being shot to pieces, dripping with the blood from the bullet wounds and only laughing it off as well as the sequences where they go out of their way for meat are examples of this, but it's nothing new for the events that transpire to happen as vampires. There's also some decent action sequences which are always fun and enjoyable, with a stellar car chase through the city following the interruption at the dockyard, the series of high- impact car crashes that result from their inability to drive, the gunfight at the strip-club is all-out fun and the ending in the city streets is simply spectacular with the vampire battles on the rooftop and then the big crash with the bus down below. It was also pretty erotic at times and was nice to see it sprinkled pretty regularly, including a really nice sex scene in a bathtub and another one in a hotel room that is really nice and actually genuinely erotic. The last big plus is that the gore is nice and pretty bloody at times from the different wounds and feasted-upon bodies to gunshots, while there's also a really great effect of a vampire literally melting away in a long, extended sequence that is pretty bloody, from the welts on the arm to the burnt skin and way the body is distorted and melts away look really great. All told, this was a pretty decent vampire entry while there are still a few problems. The biggest problem here is that quite honestly, this just doesn't know what it wants to be. This doesn't know if it wants to be a horror movie, a mob movie or a comedy since it tries really hard to be all of the above but just doesn't come together very tightly for much of the time. There never really is anything here that appeals to fans of all the different genres melded in here which is what's needed to give it a bigger appeal, jumping around to the various different plot lines and not really being integrated all that well. The length is another major obstacle. This is really stretched out, and at times is a little painful to sit through as most of this is pointless dialogue and it's flawed premise at play. However, these are all to hold against the film.

I love this movie. Watched it over and over again on cable until I could get the DVD. It's fun although the first killing is little more blood than I am used to. I love some of the scenes that you know aren't possible if you live in Pittsburgh such as coming out of the Liberty Tubes and being in Monroeville. I know people that would love that commute. Or jumping off the Courthouse roof in downtown and ending up at St. Peter's on the Northside on their lawn. Robert Loggia is perfect as the Sallie and this is where I first fell in love Anthony LaPaglia. Best line is in the beginning where Marie looks at the newspaper and says she's going to "eat Italian tonight."
No. The script was written by Michael Wolk. The 1980 novel of the same name, by author P.D. James, has nothing to do with the story in the movie. Marie sleeps, but uses modern beds. She has superhuman strength, speed, and senses. She can venture onto church grounds, and can see her reflection in a mirror. She's repulsed by the smell of garlic, and bright electric lights hurt her sensitive eyes. Sunlight will kill her. She can be wounded by such weapons as a sharp knife or bullets from a gun, but wounds to her body will heal; she can only be killed by a shot to the brain, or if her spinal cord is disconnected from it (this is why she uses a shotgun to finish off prey). Her eyes can flash green, blue, red, and/or yellow when excited, aroused, or angry. She feeds at the neck of prey, but tears into it rather than just sinking her teeth in. Marie's victims become vampires unless killed right after she's done feeding.
It's interesting to note that the word 'vampire' is never spoken in the movie.No. We often get the impression a vampire's body is cold....that suggests it would be difficult/impossible to incubate a human child. And blood appears to be the only substance a vampire can take into their bodies. Another liquid is required to make a baby.
Also vampires appear to reproduce via infection.
In mythology there is such a creature known as the dhampir, although normally the child of a male vampire and human woman, in recent fiction it can be the spawn of a female vampire and male human as well. It's left up to the viewer to decide. It's clear they remain together as lovers, but it's not implied or shown if she changes him. She said something about feeling alive so maybe Marie could turn human. In the US, only the R-Rated Version has been released so far. In Germany, the Uncensored Unrated Version was released on VHS immediately. The Unrated Version features some more nudity and two extended scenes containing violence.
Later, an Exlusive Extended Edition with 3 additional plot scenes was released on DVD in Germany. This version is based on the Unrated Version, as a result of that it's uncut as well and the longest version available worldwide. 497e39180f
