Watching Death Wish reminded me of The Brave One (which had artsy vibes and depth), Man on Fire (which had a NIN soundtrack and some real bite), Equalizer (again Denzel sold the character and it was engaging), John Wick (fun and well produced), Death Sentence (with some real balls and bite). There are so many of these films - all with the same formulaic structure - family death, vigilante justice, cop who turns blind eye.
Having read reviews, I expected Death Sentence to have bite and edge, and push the bar. LOTS of action, killings, gore, tension - a non-stop thrill-ride. But apart from some incredibly brief moments of gore, its about as bland and generic as it gets. Every aspect about it - the opening 'happy family in kitchen' scene, the cops, the villains, Willis wearing a hood like its a sequel to Unbreakable, you've seen it ALL before. Willis doesn't emote at all - no grief for his wife, no desperation, no anger, no nothing. Just that Willis face going through the motions, as you'd expect.
I actually wished it was another generic Liam Neeson thriller, because at least Neeson can do 'tense' and 'annoyed'. I have no idea why I keep watching Eli Roth's films, they're all bland trash with no directorial flair whatsoever.
This movie is full of gritty realism and emotions. The plot doesn't throw you any major twists, but it still never fails to entertain. You can truly empathize with these characters, which is all too rare in a modern Hollywood that seems divorced from the experiences of regular Americans.
Directed by Eli Roth with the same knowing smirk that has informed his previous exercises in self-satisfied bloodletting ("Cabin Fever," "The Green Inferno," the "Hostel" movies), the movie is a slick, straightforward revenge thriller as well as a sham provocation, pandering shamelessly to the viewer's bloodlust while trying to pass as self-aware satire. Your time, to say nothing of your outrage, is much better spent elsewhere.
