Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.
To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
Last Monday (January 16th, 2012), I saw this movie on my first "outing" with my potential prom date. I really wanted to see the Sherlock Holmes sequel but it wasn't showing at a time that I could see it and, thankfully, I hate chick flicks/romantic comedies, so Contraband was the only choice. I loved it! Mark Wahlberg gave a strong, though not particularly poignant performance of a desperate man who wants to keep his family safe. So, in my opinion, the movie has a relatively simple plot, one everyone can generally relate to. I mean, if you have a past, then you have a past.
Additionally, the film had enough violent action to keep it exciting. Plus, I really liked the Briggs character. He was darn cool. The multiple tats, the "wangsta" attitude, and even his voice (which gave him a little oomph for some reason) all made him pretty darn likable. Despite being a total jerk.
However, the only thing I did not like about this movie was Chris's(Mark) wife. I mean, in all honesty, she was kinda dumb. Seriously. If you live in a certain environment (she knew all about her husband's past and what her younger brother was up to), then why in the heck do you not have a gun?! C'mon woman. Geez. She was super helpless. That made me mad.
This was a pretty good heist thriller. I thought the story was unique (although I'm not sure just how feasible it would be) the location too, I haven't seen many movies aboard freighters in the Panama Canal before. The action scenes exciting, the cast more than decent and a pretty great ending, again not sure exactly how "that" all worked out but it was fun.
There isn't anything particularly stand out here though, and this is one of those "almost" movies that just falls short. I'm sure I won't remember anything about it a week from now but it was entertaining while I was watching. The cast is excellent, Mark Wahlberg is doing one of his standard roles -tough family guy but Ben Foster, Diego Luna, Giovanni Ribi play some great characters and really sink their teeth in. J.K. Simmons, Kate Beckinsale, & Lukas Haas also impressed.
The story follows Chris Farraday as a former smuggler who after going legit and settling into a stable life with his wife and sons finds himself back in the game when his brother in law botches a deal with a ruthless drug lord. In a bid to help save his life and settle the debt Chris finds himself making one last run, which sees him aboard a freighter to Panama where he has set up a counterfeiting deal. Nothing goes according to plan and Farraday faces vicious criminals, corrupt officials and trigger happy hit men in a bid to help his desperate brother in law and wife back home. 1/4/16
This Americanized version of the 2008 Nordic thriller "Reykjavik Rotterdam" transfers the original's gritty, violent action into an entertaining and intense starring role for Mark Wahlberg.
When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family.
