A small-time gangster named Chandu teams up with Malik, a low-level enforcer for a criminal syndicate. Together they eliminate all their enemies, becoming the most feared gangsters in Mumbai.
Under the leadership of underworld Don Aslam Bhai (Madan Joshi) flourishes a criminal empire in Bombay. His close associates are Mallik (Ajay Devgan) and Chandrakant alias Chandu (Vivek Oberoi). Awaiting the right opportunity, Mallik and Chandu take over from Aslam, and become the two heads of his criminal empire. Times change, and the two also decide to change with the times, and legitimize their empire to a very large extent and call it "Company". Differences arise between easy-going & emotional Chandu and the technical & matter of fact Mallik. A lot of missundersatandings develop between once very good friends, Chandu loses ground and face. He decides to take matters in his own hand & set things right. He breaks away from the gang, and as a result a war results between those loyal to him on one side, and those loyal to Mallik, on the other. Mallik's forces prove to be stronger, Chandu must decide if he compromise with Mallik or go on the right path.
This is easily the greatest Hindi film ever made. It is perfect in everyway, there is no way to improve upon it. The problem with Hindi movies is that they have stupid LONGASS songs. But in here the songs are needed, as they tell a story, and aren't extremely long. If this was re-released in English theaters and properly advertised, it would make millions. I simply love this movie, and it is the top 1# movie in it genre of gangster/mod movies. I've seen Godfather, and this movie is on par with it. It just so well written, and acted, that I could've of easily mistakin it for an English film.(except for many many things done in the film).
I have watched One bollywood movie after another only to be disappointed by the same old storylines directors songs routine. The standard masala movie it seems is finally boring people and the newer breed of directors are finally taking over. Movies like "Satya", "Rangeela" and "Kaun" were just glimpses of what Ramgopal verma can really do. Company it seems is his magnum opus. I do hope though that he continues to improve and better himself further in his next few movies.
After watching Company all I could say was WOW !!! I knew that I was going to expect something different but this was just mind blowing stuff. For those who are not familiar with the storyline, this movie is a look at the Mumbai underworld (or the India mafia). Even though the director says the work is fictional, everyone knows that the story is loosely based upon Mumbai dons Dawood Ibrahim and his friend (and later adversary) Chota Rajan.
Story line revolves around Malik Bhai (Ajay Devgan), his right hand man Chandu (Vivek Oberoi) and Police boss Srinivas (South Indian superstar Mohanlal). It starts with Malik being one of the lower bosses recruiting Chandu (a then small time hood) into the big time gang. Soon after Malik takes over the whole gang with Chandu loyally supporting him.
Malik is a very smart and ruthless man and with the combination of money, negotiations and power he takes over the entire Mumbai underworld. The police is a mix of corrupt lower inspectors but a tough as nails boss Srinivas. Srinivas makes life tough for the gangters with some of his own shrewdness and forces Malik and his gang to escape to Hong Kong.
However, Malik is prepared for this and he runs his operations via mobile phones from Hong Kong now, and even improves his net. Things are running fine till some personality differences and misunderstanding turn Chandu and Malik against each other.
What happens next is a brilliant series of plot twists and some obvious conclusions. The obvious message of "crime never pays" is left for the viewer to deduce.
I must say that the acting is superb. Vivek Oberoi as Chandu gets the best role as the most "human" of all characters. However the show stealer is Ajay Devgan. He is so good that its scary. I never thought he had this much acting potential to be honest. Monisha Koirala as his junky girlfriend Saroja is brilliant as well. She is so much in character that I could'nt even recognise her in the beginning.
The understated performance of Mohanlal should'nt be ignored either. He is great with his south indian broken hindi accent, and says a lot of memorable oneliners. I wondered occassionaly if there really were cops in India like him.
All the other supporting cast is good and make their mark felt. The direction by Ramgopal Verma, as mentioned earlier is Spot on. His cinematographers and editors have done a great job in making the movie very fast paced. You dont get a single boring scene.
Music is wonderful and what is different here is that there are no songs in the normal hindi movie sense (well there is one but its still different). All the songs in the sound track are actually embedded in the background score, just like hollywood.
Just to sum up, I think if India can produce even 2 movies of this calibre every year, there is hope for them yet !!!!
