A cyborg is programmed to kill a scientist who holds the fate of mankind in his hands. He fails and hides in a diner in a desert run by a woman who likes him. The people who sent him are after him and so is the local arm wrestling champ.
Sinister industrialist Francis Turner, played by John Saxon, creates a cyborg known as Paco Queruak (Daniel Greene) who has been programmed to terminate the leader of an ecological faction that stands in the way of the dystopian country in which the story is set. After failing in his mission to eliminate the ecologist, Paco flees to Arizona where he must face his opponents; and ultimately choose between his humanity and robotic natures.
What self-respecting movie director doesn't dream of making a film that is basically The 6 Million Dollar Man meets Roadhouse meets Over The Top meets Airwolf meets Terminator meets Deadly Prey meets The A-Team? Well, probably most of them. Most directors would rather make 'Leonardo DiCaprio Doing Very Serious Things And Looking Concerned'. However Mr. Sergio Martino is not most directors, because Hands Of Steel.
Hands Of Steel is a traditional story of one man's quest to get revenge on someone for something or other. It follows the classic storyline structure of a beginning (office shootout), middle (arm wrestling tournament), and end (helicopter chase), but also shifts into hyperdrive with some groundbreakingly sizzling dialogue between the main guy (forgot his name) and that woman who was also in Eaten Alive. Ice Hot baby... I could go on and on and on, but to summarise: A film so 80s you will grow a mullet while watching it. - unless you already have a mullet, in which case your mullet will give itself a hi 5.
If you were to have watched this film when it was released, you'd have probably thought it was OK, or been a little disappointed. But watch it now, in 2017, and it takes on a whole different identity.
Hands of Steel is just a pure cheese fest of 80's stereotypes. The fight scenes are badly choreographed, the shoot outs have over the top sound effects dubbed on, magazine clips that never run out, and helicopters that seem to be able to withstand hundreds of bullets with no effect. The bad guys are even worse shots than in Commando!
The music and sound effects are typically and wonderfully 80's, and the script has to contain some of the corniest lines ever. And when they unleash the 'futuristic' laser weapon.. well, that was the final touch of perfection for me!
If you loved the 1980's and the action films it produced, then you will absolutely love Hands of Steel. I have never smiled and laughed so much watching a film in a long time. It's fantastic!
Watch it with a few friends and some beers, and you're guaranteed a fantastic evening.
