Following the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father's large company, teams up with his late dad's assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team. When news magnate James Reid dies, his son Britt and chauffeur Kato, resentful of Reid's slights, vandalize a graveyard statue. By chance, they also rescue a couple from thugs, but TV reports the vandalism, not the heroism. Britt, thinking he's a genius while relying on Kato's mechanical and kung-fu skills, decides to be a superhero, the Green Hornet, and use his father's paper to play up the bad-guy elements. The reporting on the Hornet upsets LA's DA, who's up for reelection, and the city's real crime boss, Chudnofsky. Plus, how long will Kato suffer in silence, when he has all the skill? Competition for the affection of Britt's assistant, Lenore, brings things to a head. Review: Green Hornet With all the talk of January being a dumping ground for horrible movies and The Green Hornet being one of those at the top of the list I was surprised by how I felt at the end of the movie. By all means this does not mean it was a great movie. I felt it was a very enjoyable movie to go and watch. That being said there were still things that were plenty annoying about this movie.

Most obviously would be the excessive prattling from Seth Rogen's character Britt Reid, aka The Green Hornet. Granted it was his movie he wrote, and helped pushed to fruition but he really needed to dial back some of the stuff he seems to think is funny. I am glad he didn't rely on the normally heavy pot related jokes and pranks though. It just was easy to understand how whiny and childlike his character was but it didn't need to be etched that hard into our eyes and ears.

From what I know of the Green Hornet, which is very little, I am glad they seemed to expand upon the relationship between Kato and himself. Something I noticed was how in the beginning of the credits they made sure how they said it was based off the radio series which I had no idea of, so from what little I learned from the Green Hornet marathon on SyFy earlier in the week seems to have little merit on this adaptation. So my preconceived notions on how interactions would go between characters left me surprised. I am not sure how true Green Hornet fans are feeling about this movie, which I hope they would write to me and let me know some of the flaws they saw so that I may learn.

Sadly I felt that Christoph Waltz's talent was very underused. His character, Chudnofsky's opening scene with a meth dealer, played by Rogen's amazingly talented friend James Franco, was very much what I would have expected. It is all of Chudnofsky's following scenes that seemed to lack that spark that Waltz typically brings, and I want to blame the writing because it seems like his character was a set archetype by the writers, and that he did the best with what he could. This is all that I could find fault with the film because other wise the car, which has always been the most important part of the series, was amazing and stole every scene.

Of course Jay Chou's portrayal as Kato is part of the reason the car was so awesome as well as the fight scenes. They seemed to borrow some elements from Sherlock Holmes's fight scenes of slowing down the action before hand and also at key elements. This worked very well to showcase the martial arts prowess of Kato, and add a bit of edginess to what could have been otherwise boring and standard fights.

I was a tad surprised at how little screen time Cameron Diaz had throughout the movie but in retrospect I am quite happy with this decision. She has always been one of my least favorite actresses and the amount of time she had seemed to fit perfectly for this movie. At the end you see how she could come into a much bigger role in possible sequels.

All in all I was stung with surprise by The Green Hornet and I hope you all will look past bad early press and appreciate it the movie for its whole and not just focus on certain parts. Going into this, I wasn't sure how 'Michel Gondry' it was going to be- wasn't sure if he would make a more 'traditional' movie to tell a serious, dramatic Green Hornet story- or if he would utilize his artful talent of creating interesting/stylized camera angles and scenes made so famous by Eternal Sunshine, Be Kind Rewind, and various other films- including his music videos for the White Stripes, etc. Luckily Gondry stays true to his signature style and creates thrilling visuals and very exciting and fun to watch fight scenes. And it isn't just the fight scenes, there are many other segments of eye candy for cinephiles like myself who appreciate both story and how the camera tells the story. I was impressed, the movie was much better than expected with a lot of laughs and a lot of thrilling action with a pretty decent story. I was concerned that I would be disappointed with Rogen but wasn't in the least! The Green Hornet provides a half-hour's worth of mildly entertaining travesty before collapsing in a clamor of bombastic action sequences and lame wisecracks. It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black. It's called "Live With Me" by the Rolling Stones. 646f9e108c
