Fan film that uses footage from various Star Trek games to tell a new story. Fearing another Borg attack, the Federation puts Picard in charge of developing their own secret cloaking tech. Meanwhile, an alien organism infects a Borg cube. It's 17 years after the return of Voyager. The Alpha quadrant has been preparing for the return of the Borg, primarily by investing massive R&D in offensive and defensive weaponry. During the long peace, the Federation/Klingon alliance has been wearing thin, with the younger factions seeking a return to the old ways. Meanwhile, the Federation, taking advantage of a détente with the Romulans, have cautiously begun to work to with them on "holocloak" technology -- a combination of a "holodeck" and a cloaking device. Technically, this is a violation of the treaty of Algeron, which forbids the Federation the use of cloaking technology. While the treaty is technically between the Federation and the Romulans, the Federation's willingness to forgo cloaking is a linchpin of the Federation/Klingon alliance. The consensus at Starfleet is that the free races of the Alpha quadrant must work together if the next Borg invasion is to be successfully repelled. However, because the Klingons, due their racial hatred of the Romulans, are unlikely to agree with this strategy, Starfleet is keeping the "holocloak" research under wraps. Because of his broad understanding of both the Borg and Alpha Quadrant interracial politics, Captain Picard has been given full authority over the entire project. Meanwhile, a Borg cube visits a desert planet searching for additional biological diversity to strengthen the collective. When a Borg unit becomes infected with an viral "exomorph," the infection forces a break with the collective. In order to prevent re-assimilation and to find a safe haven to propagate, the infected cube leaves Borg space. By chance, it stumbles onto a Klingon mining freighter that belongs to the House of Miqoch, the Klingon clan that's responsible for the Klingon Empire's anti-Borg program. Jureth, the eldest son of the House of Miqoch, though the liaison between the Klingon Empire and the Federation on anti-Borg projects, has not yet learned of the growing cooperation between the Federation and the Romulans. His brother, Kephren, is of one of the young rebels who despises both the Federation and his Federation-tainted brother. You can't expect a lot from a Machinima movie. The characters are 3D models reused from various games, the animations are kind of locked in place and the only thing that can save it is a good story and good audio dubbing. With this in mind, it has a decent story and bad, but not horrible dubbing. The sound bits were cut and pasted, though, from who knows what source and it fast gets really annoying.

But consider the plot. An unsuccessful assimilation of an alien species results in a hybrid that wants to take over the Borg and destroy all life. Picard's Enterprise and Tuvok's Dallas (a version of Defiant) join forces with Klingons and Romulans to defend. However the strenuous relationship between the three races leads to complications and we get to witness in the end a semi assimilated Enterprise with a holo-cloaking device fighting a planet-size Borg sphere wrecked by interspecies civil war. It can hardly get better than that.

Now, the plot is sketchy, there are numerous confusing bits and parts that make no sense and all the characters are horrible clichés of their respective races, but what was worst of all was the dialogue. I understand that they had limited audio material to work with and, by that standard, they did a very decent job. But objectively it is still horrible!

Bottom line: a Borg methadone pill for the hardcore trekkie having withdrawal symptoms. Firstly i apologise if this review is not as coherent as it could be, but this is the first I have reviewed anything, and I'm not spending hours tweaking my words etc.

NO Spoilers below Generally, this film is about the Borg collective making another attempt on the alpha quadrant 17 years after the return of voyager. Federation, Klingon and Romulan must form an alliance to combat the new Borg threat in order to resist assimilation, yet there is deception and a new threat emerges with the intent to annihilate all.

For me, it took nearly 1/2 an hour to understand what the plot line was - due to the fact of an extremely 'rushed' opening to the film which was preoccupied trying to force the action and suspense etc down my throat in order to try to grip the audience and enforce confidence that it will be action packed and enjoyable. Personally i found it a bit jumbled and was stumped as to what was going on. I've found is a common folly of fan flicks, no character interaction and no real introduction which is a big part of the real Star Trek. I imagine its done in fear of the audience thinking that as it is a fan flick that it will be boring. BUT ... About 20 minutes into it you begin to understand and the pieces do fit together very well.

For the most part, this film is the best fan production from the Star Trek universe. Albeit that it was essentially made from the game engines of primarily the Star Trek Elite Force games for interiors and characters, Starfleet Command III and Bridge Commander for the exteriors and ships. Despite the graphics being aged by todays standards, the director and produced i will admit they did a good job in piecing this together.

This was the only fan production i have ever enjoyed, which includes Star Trek : Of Gods and Men. I was very surprised and the thought involved and the action throughout.

However..

I have given this 4 / 10 for 3 reasons :

1 ) The speech splicing was reminiscent of a prank call sound board, very very very very VERY annoying when its gets 1 hour in.

2 ) It seems to have been compiled on a extremely weak and old computer, the frame rate goes right down to a flip book during action sequences.

3 ) Not as important as the above - Glitches. Planets, ships and star bases jump and judder around, which as far as i can remember did not happen in the games. Probably due to reason no 2.

If the three tiny points had been ironed out i would have given this 7/10. But frankly, how the makers of this let those points slip through the net is bewildering and beyond me. As an analogy, Michelangelo has just finished the Sistine chapel ceiling painting and decided to smear feaces on it....

But give it a try anyhow! Machinima involves the manipulation and reprogramming of computer games to create raw footage, which is then edited into the final version of the film. Borg War was created using two Trek-themed games, Starfleet Command 3 and Elite Force 2, and then editing using Pinnacle Studio 9. The sound files from the game were mixes, matched and mashed to tell an entirely new story using the freeware program Audacity. The entire process of making Borg War, start to finish, took approximately 1620 hours or about 202 eight hour workdays. The production of the raw footage using the two computer games involved the creation of about 15 virtual sets, about 200 additional textures, modding of all character model configuration files, editing of voiceover clips (about 50 percent are combined from 2 or more clips), camera work (placement, pan, zoom, etc.) and about 35,000 lines of EF2 programming script. The resulting several dozen hours of raw footage were then edited down to create the final film and many new SFX were added using the video editor. The EF2 game engine, which was used for all character shots, has two methods for lipsyncing. The first (which they supported in the modding environment) is relatively simplistic -- the louder the tone, the more open the mouth is. It works reasonably well, compared to, say, the original dubbing of Godzilla. The other method (which they didn't make available to modders) actually moves the lips, teeth and tongue separately. Only voice files that are used verbatim from the EF2 game have this capability, so I used these wherever I could (mostly with Picard and Tuvok). Newer game engines, like Half-Life 2, have much better facilities for lipsynching. Unfortunately, Borg War was started in 2004, so it uses the game engines that were available at the time. Borg War is a "new game material," and is thus specifically allowed under the user license of the two games, provided that the materials are identified as such and not distributed for profit. The voiceover work of the series actors were included as part of the intellectual property of the games and have been modded in accordance with that license. Some of the actors are aware of the project. Tim Russ (who plays the role of Tuvok) characterized Borg War as "Very Cool!" CBS is aware of the Borg War project and has approved its showing at an officially licensed Star Trek convention. However, they have requested that the following disclaimer be associated with the film: "Borg War is not endorsed, sponsored or affiliated with CBS Studios Inc. Activision or the 'Star Trek' franchise. STAR TREK® and its related marks are trademarks and copyrights of CBS Studios Inc." Borg War was entirely written, filmed and edited by one person, in his spare time. It is an example of what may be the future of cinema (or at least of some kinds of cinema) where a single person, working alone, can build an entire feature movie using inexpensive software and computers. This is the democratization of production, a similar concept to the democratization of distribution, as represented by the Internet. 646f9e108c
