En route to an assignment in Cairo, journalist Steve Martin stops off in Tokyo on a personal visit. While there, the local media begins to report on strange happenings at sea with ships being destroyed and entire crews being lost. They travel to a remote Japanese island where they encounter a gigantic prehistoric beast, dubbed Godzilla, which has apparently been awakened by H-bomb testing. Godzilla soon appears in Tokyo harbor but several attempts to destroy it fail and the city is destroyed. Their only remaining hope is a new weapon.
American reporter Steve Martin, on his way to Cairo for an assignment, has a stop over in Tokyo. During the layover, he decides to visit his old friend Dr. Daisuke Serizawa. However, the night before he landed, his plane passed over an area where a ship suddenly exploded and caught fire killing all hands. Martin is then questioned by the authorities and he tells them he saw nothing. After seven more ships suddenly disappear, Martin decides to stay in Japan to see what is going on. He and policeman Tomo Iwanaga then go to Odo Island, which is close to where many of the ships were destroyed. While there, they are caught in a typhoon and during the storm something comes ashore and kills several of the inhabitants and destroys several buildings. A few days later a scientific expedition led by paleontologist Dr. Kyohei Yamane arrives on the island and they are horrified to find a giant monster the natives call Godzilla. Now Japan and the world wait to see what horrors this monster will bring.
This was the first and certainly the best of the Godzilla movies brought to us from Toho Studios.
Ships start to disappear in the sea around Japan, killing everyone on board. American reporter Steve Martin, visiting a friend in Tokyo decides to stay and investigate these disappearances. He goes to Odo Island where most of the ships have disappeared and the locals say the legendry monster Godzilla was responsible for these. While on the island, a trilobite is found and the following night, Godzilla attacks and that's when we first see him. He gradually makes his way to Japan and goes on the rampage in Tokyo, destroying the city and killing many people. A scientist comes up with a device known as the oxygen destroyer that could kill Godzilla, but only his wife knows about this and he wants to keep that way. After being persuaded to use it on Godzilla after refusing at first, he agrees and it works successfully, but is killed himself too. Godzilla is not dead though...
I have both versions of this movie: the original, uncut Japanese version with English subtitles which I taped off Channel 4 late one night and the shorter, dubbed American version which I had ordered off the internet. Both are excellent.
Steve Martin is played by Raymond Burr (Ironside).
Godzilla, King of the Monsters is certainly a must see, especially if you are into 1950's sci fi and monster movies, like myself. Great stuff.

This film has a-lot more than just a horror story going for it,and it is this very distinction that makes Godzilla such a worthwhile movie going experience.Godzilla is truly a monster that according to the film was waken from the sleep of time by the advent of the nuclear age.His footsteps bare the burden of radioactivity and even this film gives testament to the dawn of the nuclear age.That is what Godzilla is,a awesome,dangerous creature that has powers that the human kind can not defeat,it is reported that the monster Godzilla stands some thirty stories tall,truly terrifying.Through out the film as Godzilla's presence is ever widening, the effect on the life of the people of Japan provides for a deepening sorrow which seems to grip the psychology of the film.This is a very worthy contribution to humanity as the devastation that Godzilla or its creation has provided for has robbed the life of the Japanese people and threatened civilization as a whole.You feel it and you sense it that this is a creature that will not be denied.Godzilla is indeed the King of the Monsters.The film has excellent mood quality with outstanding music which can even be a inspiration as witness to the morning after the destruction of Tokyo.Both in choir as well as composition the music adds effect with dramatic detail as does the fact that the film is in Black and White.However naive the film making was then it does not lessen the impact of such a horrible turn of events.This kind of emotional outlay is of the quality that life possesses in its bosom.This is not a put on because if indeed such would be the case, then we would have a real life horror event perhaps the likes of which provided for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.This is why this film is much more than a horror film it is in fact a true story.The love story is very understated and like so much of the Japanese culture they are a very heroic people,Iam in principle referring to the scientist who discovers what will be used to destroy Godzilla.It is referred to as a oxygen destroyer and it indeed takes precedence.This film no matter how dated it might seem still provides for a very eloquent statement about the world we live in.There is the end which brings us to a point,What do you think?
