Clay, Jensen, Pooch, and Roque are part of United States Special Forces Unit. They are deployed to a mission in Bolivia involving a drug lord, they end up disobeying orders and rescuing children. Their enraged boss, codenamed Max, orders them dead, but they survive, and end up doing small-time jobs. Then Aisha enters their lives, smuggles them back to the States on the condition that they kill Max. The group will soon realize that she has inducted them on a suicide mission - a mission which will take them to Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and to Mumbai, India; and come in possession of a mysterious encrypted hard-drive while not only facing betrayal from one of their own but also certain and violent death at the hands of Max.
A CIA special forces team are betrayed and left for dead by their superiors, galvanizing them to mount an offensive on the CIA.
Despite its title, The Losers had home field advantage over the other two 'A-Team' knockoffs to be released in 2010: The Expendables and, of course, The A-Team, themselves. It was released first so, naturally, it should gain the most interest and money. Or so the producers think.
What short-term memory Hollywood has. The rush to get the unoriginal, knock-off or cheap remake out first rarely works. Case in point: Antz (10/2/98, $90.7 million) VS. A Bug's Life (11/20/98, $162.8 million), Deep Impact (5/8/98, $140.5 million) VS. Armageddon (7/1/98, $201.6 million) and Dante's Peak (2/7/97, $67.1 million) VS. Volcano (4/25/97, $49.3 million.) Okay
that last one doesn't count, but that's probably because Dante's Peak was the better of the two and volcanoes had run their lava course by the time the Tommy Lee Jones movie appear a mere 2½ months later.
The same is happening – to date, that is – for The Losers: The Losers (4/23/10, $23.6 million) VS. The A-Team (6/11/10, $77.0 million) VS. The Expendables (8/13/10, $75.20 million. By the end of its run, it'll be on top by far.) Clearly we know who the winners and, uh, LOSERS are in this race.
But, let's back up. We have not two this time, but 3 (THREE!) movies this year involving expendable losers who pose as comedic mercenaries and care a lot about male-bonding while male-bashing? And some people – myself included – defend Hollywood when its criticized for not having original ideas.
In The Losers's defense, it wasn't all that bad. Chris Evans as Jensen stole every scene he was in, like always – SEE: Fantastic Four One and Two. The action was, well, mediocre and the comedy was good in spurts.
What it suffered from was not just an unoriginal script (long before the other two band of soldier films were released) but a very weak reason to make a movie including a very weak Bond Villain. And yes, that's exactly what Jason Patric as Max was: a third rate Bond Villain that even Timothy Dalton would mock. Also, ENOUGH! already with the slow-mo, Matrix/Music video style. Not only has it been done a hundred and fifty times, in the past year or so, but it sincerely makes the 97 movie seem like 87 minutes stretched to fill in the gaps of dead air.
As mentioned, we have the top elite special band/blend of soldiers who target their prey, but get sabotaged and something really, really bad happens. This, of course, sends our heroes underground where they seek redemption, their lives back and revenge. Along the way, they meet a beautiful woman who has both secrets and a secret past and, lest I forget, she kicks butt and looks great doing it.
Yep, it's really that simple and thoroughly clichéd. Granted, I am willing to overlook that – all of that – if you give me something, anything to separate it from the other two dozen plot synopsizes this has been copied/pasted from. Again, they got lazy, slowed down the action to fit the Matrix-Mold, relied heavily on blatantly unrealistic scenes – yeah, like that street heist would happen and spelled out the plot in A-B-C format.
Okay, as always I'm being too harsh – and I can think of one friend who'll give me the evil eye for bashing this movie. Hey now, I still awarded it 2½ stars out of 5 – so it wasn't terrible. It's actually enjoyable in some spots – namely whenever Evans was on screen and especially when he "dresses up" – or is that down? – for his "Don't Stop Believin'" song, dance and air kills. That was great. Also, despite Jeffrey Dean Morgan's enormously overdone leader role in Clay, he still did relatively well, though he shined higher in Watchmen. And finally, if you can skip the WTF? fight/intro scene for Zoe Saldana's Aisha, she was watchable, as well.
If you had to pick of the three BADASS soldier action comedies, go with The A-Team, but since it isn't out yet on video and neither is the just barely released: The Expendables, I guess you will have to settle on these Losers. You won't increase your IQ, but you won't lose too much if you leave your brain at the door and just watch an about average action flick.
Was far mo bettah than I expected. The action was good. The story was good. Nothing spectacular. The only thing that caused some maybe unexpected laughter was the casting of Zoe Saldana. Really?
A busy, unsatisfying comic thriller, poorly acted by a grab bag of new faces and franchise movie refugees, and set to a hard-rock soundtrack.
