A young father and his infant son are beset by forces of evil and corruption. They wander China, upholding their sense of honor and protecting the weak. When they are forced into combat, spectacular and hilarious fast-motion kung fu sequences follow. In the end, they must call on all of their abilities in a battle royale, to attempt to vanquish a supernatural man-monster or die trying.
Jet Li has made some pretty good movies such as Once Upon a Time in China and Kiss of the Dragon, but the fact is he makes more bad movies than good ones. This is one of his typical bad ones, directed by the king of schlock, Wong Jing. The lowest budget Hollywood movies put to shame the special effects in this one. It has the most obvious looking dummies I've ever seen on film. Deannie Yip(the mom) plays the only likable character in this idiotic movie.The action and suspense lack excitement because the impossible can happen at any time in this silly movie. This movie is stupid! It amazes me that this garbage can pass as entertainment in some countries.
This was the first kung-fu movie I ever saw, and I can't think of a better introduction to the genre.
Hong Xiguan has everything -- evil eunuchs, cute kids who are good at kung-fu, babes who are good at kung-fu, monks who are good at kung-fu, and evil melted-face guys who are good at kung-fu. Jet Li is incredible to watch, as always, but the real highlight of this, for me at least, was Tse Miu's performance. Miu's kung-fu is unbelievable, even given the "help" he receives from wires and trampolines, and he has a magnetic screen presence.
