Flash Gordon is an American football player who along with Dale Arden are returning to New York City after a long vacation, until the plane they are passengers on crashes into the laboratory of Russian scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. Both Flash and Dale become unwilling passengers on-board Zarkov's rocketship as Zarkov sets a course for the planet Mongo. Arriving on Mongo, Flash and his companions find the planet is under the rulership of the evil Emperor Ming the Merciless and Ming is attacking Earth with natural disasters as he bids to destroy Earth. Realizing that Earth and the human race is in mortal danger, Flash decides to unite the kingdoms of Mongo and combine the forces of rivals Prince Barin and Prince Vultan to rescue Dale, who is to become Ming's wife and defeat Ming and save Earth from annihilation. Flash Gordon is an American football hero who is skyjacked aboard Dr. Hans Zarkov's rocketship along with his beautiful girlfriend Dale Arden. The threesome are drawn into the influence of the planet Mongo, ruled by Emperor Ming the Merciless. The evil Ming has been testing Earth with unnatural disasters, and deeming our world a threat to his rule. He also intends to take Dale as his concubine, attempts to execute Flash and intends to destroy Earth. Flash must avoid the amorous attentions of Ming's daughter, and unite the warring kingdoms of Mongo to rescue Dale and save our world. I remember first watching this film years ago with my brothers, when I was probably about 9 or 10. My brothers hated it, and slated it as an awful movie that would never again be shown in our house. It wasn't until 15 years later that I saw it again, and I do declare it is one of the best things I've ever seen.

I think everyone can split films into two different sections; best films and favourite films. Whilst one may decide that the Usual Suspects is the best film ever made, you may not think it is your favourite film, as you cannot watch it over and over again. That is why Flash Gordon, whilst actually being a terribly made film with awful acting and a script that does not make any sense half the time, would fall into the category of favourite films.

If you're not in the mood for thinking about plot twists, or if you're looking for a terrific comedy, look no further than Flash. Your sides will hurt with laughter from the randomness of the action going on, and some of the delicious lines. Most importantly, this film features Brian Blessed as the comic relief.

I believe Brian Blessed did not have a script for this movie, they just pointed a camera at him and told him to start doing weird stuff. He is ridiculously over the top, in a style that only Brian Blessed can get away with. He's so loud that you have to adjust the television set for fear of going deaf, but without him the movie would be nothing. He spends most of the film running about laughing, and any time you cant hear him laughing, he is still smiling. Without a doubt, the happiest man in the world ever, and feeling like you are in his presence, his happiness is infectious.

Nobody will quickly forget the classic delivery of "Gordon's alive?!" and the bizarre scene where he laughs for an uncomfortably length of time. "Ah well, who wants to live forever? hahahahahahahahaha DIIIIIIVVVVVEEEE!" What the hell was so funny about saying who wants to live forever? It is scenes like this (basically every scene Blessed is in) that make this difficult to rationalise if treating it like a real film, but at the same time these scenes make it worth watching for a roller-coaster ride of laughter, and tears of laughter, along the way.

As always, I recommend watching this with a few beers, but when I watched it recently I was in a bad mood and stone cold sober, and it really brightened up my week. Nuff said really. Now "Give me the remote control" so I can rewind to the best bits of Brian laughing and eating grapes Flash Gordon (1980) was a grand adventure of the flashiest sort (no pun intended). In the minds of many, it's a classic and has no equal. At the very least, you must appreciate the zeal with which the actors and crew tackled this particular pulp story.

Unfortunately, the film has the curse of age. It *looks* old, and that is precisely why most younger filmgoers will consider it a "bad" film, or just pass it up entirely. The problem lies in the young viewer's film bias and history. Virtually everything seen by a younger viewer (read: under 25 as of this writing) will have superior special effects and a completely different style, and I find that most younger viewers can't get past that point. They see a film like Flash Gordon and instantly see "an old movie" rather than putting themselves into 1980 and enjoying from that viewpoint. The unfortunate result is comments like "The special effects are bad" or "The characters are stupid". They can't grasp the idea that in 1980, Star Wars was the pinnacle of special effects, and was the great innovator only a few years earlier. Flash Gordon is what's to be expected from the last of the 1970's. It's the last hurrah of camp film, and anyone who understands what pulp serials were like embraces Flash Gordon as one of their favorite films. The color, the performances, the action- It all screams 1980, and perhaps that is why those of us who were there love this film to varying degrees, while those who weren't (or who are simply in denial) refuse to see anything but a sci-fi film that's "not as cool as the Matrix".

Kudos must be offered to Brian Blessed, Max von Sydow, and Timothy Dalton, who all leapt to the front of the pack in this movie, showing that a well-done over-the-top performance is as legitimate a skill as a downplayed dramatic performance. There is energy and artistry in Brian Blessed's Prince Vultan of the hawkmen. There is potency and seething, irrational evil in Max von Sydow's Emperor Ming. There is a grand robin-hood flamboyancy in Timothy Dalton's Prince Barin. The women are appropriately vampy, strong, and alluring. The hero is appropriately dashing yet dim. It all comes together to form a great story, and it's held firm by Queen's excellent music.

If you were there in 1980, you will like Flash Gordon- You will find some fun in this movie. If you were born after 1980, however, you will likely think of this as just another "old movie". Flash Gordon is played for laughs, and wisely so. It is no more sophisticated than the comic strip it's based on, and that takes the curse off of material that was old before it was born. Is all of this ridiculous? Of course. Is it fun? Yeah, sort of, it is. well Let's put it this way: you can walk, yet you still travel by car, don't you?

As much as I like the previous answer, there was a small blurb explaining the rocket cycles in a pre-production note. Something about using them as emergency transportation for injured hawk-people who couldn't fly. 646f9e108c
