Earth has been conquered by robots from a distant galaxy. Survivors are confined to their houses and must wear electronic implants, risking incineration by robot sentries if they venture outside.
Alien robots come to Earth and assert their control over humanity. They claim that they only want to observe humanity. They enforce a strict no one allowed outside rule. They implant humans with a device that alerts sentries to anyone who goes outside and if they refuse to comply they are destroyed. They also employ humans to be their proctors. One of these men is Robin Smythe. He tries to get Kate Flynn to be his wife but she still mourns her husband whom Smythe says died. But her son Sean, doesn't believe it. He sends messages out asking anyone who knows anything about his father to tell him. One day he and three young people are fooling around when they discover that they turned off their implant. That's when they go outside and someone answers Sean's message and tells him where his father is. So he goes out to find him But Smythe pursues him and brings his mother as leverage. And when the robots corner Sean he somehow manages to control them. So the Robots are curious why he can do that. So they tell Smythe to capture him.
Robot Overlords is the story of Planet Earth being conquered by robots from another galaxy and the human survivors must stay in their homes, or risk incineration. A small group of kids discovered a way to switch of the tracking mechanism by power shocks so they can sneak around without detection. In the beginning they use this for a bit of fun before beginning to take on the faith of human uprising, gathering the adults and working together to take down the big enemy and its human supporters.
Since I had seen the first Trailer of this some time ago on another Premiere screening I was really looking forward to see this movie. Of course cast names like Sir Ben Kingsley or Gillian Anderson pull viewers on this flick, but it is the youngsters like the Australian Callan McAuliffe or Ella Hunt who in the end positively surprise in their roles.
During the Movie we learn that the Robots are trying to learn from the humans and some humans are helping them with this task guided by Mediators of the Robots. Sir Ben Kingsley as a supporter of the Robots who in the final loses importance to them and gets killed as well plays his role as eccentric collaborator brilliantly. He is just cool as the rather careless bad guy.
Gillian Anderson in the role of the former Teacher and Mother was surprising different as known from other movies I remember to have watched with her. I really hope to see more movies with her on the big screen in the future or even better a comeback of the X-Files. I really liked the story and how it developed despite some scenes were easy to precast. The Scenic views of some scenes are incredible, loved the wide forests, maybe because here in the sand pit you do not see these things. Australian actor Callan McAuliffe was as well very good and the movie had even the one or other comedic moment like when Sean controls the robot and makes him do stupid poses.
Verdict: It is surely not the best Science Fiction movie ever created, but that is not the aim anyways. I found the movie pretty cool. I would have loved to have more information on how this all happened and the Robots conquered earth, but well. If you like Science Fiction movies than Robot Overlords is certainly one to watch and be entertained.
I remember reading about this film on a film magazine and they said it was going to be a trow back to kids films from the 80's so obviously I imagined D.A.R.Y.L,Goonies, The last star fighter etc.. and I started looking forward to this film. I missed it's theatrical release but finally watched it on blu ray today and I was very underwhelmed. The story start with a future were everybody are locked inside their houses by robots. I'll make the synopsis very brief to avoid any spoilers ...Humans all received some sort of tracking device on the side of their neck that alerts robots of their every move.If a human dare to step away from their house they will have 10 minutes to get home or they will be turned into dust by robots. We follow a bunch of kids that realize accidentally that this tracker can be turned off by receiving an electric shock so they shock themselves and go out then it leads to a rebellion. One of the kid also realize that he has the power to control the robots and that as you imagine comes rather handy. First of all this film feels like a TV film you will get from the CBBC in the 80's.It's very Doctor Who-ish.If you expect (like I did) a trow back to Amblin films , this is not it. This is a very British film and it embrace the type of Sci Fy Britain's has been making for decades. My biggest complain is that on the opposite spectrum of some reviewers on here who felt it was campy , I personally felt the opposite and that it took itself far too seriously. I would have liked the director to add a bit more fun to the script.The dialogs keep things very serious. The film go from Point A to B , it is very straightforward. The characters are not really fleshed out , you get introduced to them very briefly then they are immediately on their Journey.We really don't get enough time with them before hand to really gasp who they are nor really care about them. I would say this : If you are a fan of Doctor Who you might enjoy it as it feels like a feature long episode of something from the same universe as the good old Doctor.If you are after a fun family romp with adventure and comedy , you might be disappointed.It's pure British Sci Fy and it definitely not to try to be something else. It is not a bad film and like all reviews on IMD this is just my opinion and mine is that I believe that only a very specific audience will enjoy this film.
The blend of influences does feel hackneyed, at certain junctures.
