Igor Gordic (Srdjan Todorovic) won the gold medal in shooting at the World Championship in 1991. Soon after that success he got drafted by the army as a sniper. During the war the killing of people (or like the film says:"spilling their brains out") was for him only possible under the influence of drugs. After his return he quit shooting due to seeing faces of his kills from war in every target he aimed at recognizing that the only thing he can see in any rifle is death. He continued abusing drugs and fell deeper and deeper into debts and problems with Belgrade's uprising mafia-subculture where one of his former best friends (another war veteran) is one of the heads. Sasa Gordic (Vuk Kostic), Igor's younger brother, who's at shooting at least as good as Igor is preparing for a contest in France. The need of money for more drugs makes his brother sell the shooting stand the two brothers inherited by their father. As the new owner limits Sasa's access he takes Igor's rifle from war and takes law into his own hands, but the new owner of the stand is only the first victim to come in this drama. This movie is one of the best works available from the Balkans in recent times showing pretty much the situation Serbia and probably the surrounding countries (i.e. the former Yugoslavian states) were driven into by war.
Igor Gordic was an Olympic Champion in shooting, but now he is a junky without money and in debts to mafia. Sasa is his younger brother and he is getting ready for the next World Championship. Since he's not getting enough terms to practice indoors, he's decided to go out and find himself a target to practice on.
I've seen this movie at its premiere in my town. It's a movie about two brothers, both talented and interesting in sport shooting. The older one - Igor is an ex world champion, but during the war in 1992 he exchanged his air rifle with a sniper and became a drug addict. His little brother - Sasa is a 19-year-old who can't stand watching his brother being humiliated and tortured by local mafiosos and drug dealers and he himself takes a sniper. The movie is really a story that shows strong emotions, such as love and hate. The emotions strong enough to make a child become a murderer. There were a few things that aren't so true. For example, shooting clubs in Belgrade, Yugoslavia aren't private property, and cannot be sold just like that. Especially the Shooting Club "Milicionar-Krcun", the one Sasa shoots for. Also, Sasa looks like a real champ when he's holding his rifle, but look at him when he's targeting. His rifle is moving enough to miss the whole target. This may sound ridiculous, but in the distance of 10m even a move of half a milimeter means a nine on the target. The 1mm could even be an eight. Off course these things aren't important at all and I'm sure that no one will even notice them. On a scale from 1 to 10, I give this movie a 9.
The entire cast, particularly, Vuk Kostic gave great performances that were both realistic and plausible. Most of the gangsters roles were pretty one dimensional; would have been nice to see other sides of the bullies.
Most of the reviews I had read about the film centre on whether or not it was right/ wrong for Sasa to turn chivalrous vigilante and defend his brother. his seems more in line with the culture in the Balkans where defense of honour and family are more important there than in many other parts of western Europe and the US.
Throughout most of the film I despised Igor for putting his brother through the whole experience and it was only at the end when Igor opens up to Sasa, about his experiences during the war that I begin to feel for him and understand his inability to fight back.
The choice of New Belgrade as the location was great, told a visual story about life in a part of Belgrade and could have been any concrete social housing complex in any European capital.
Definitely a film worth seeing; great acting, great plot and real drama.
