In futuristic Tokyo , the police have become privatized and are in an ongoing battle with a race of super criminals known as Engineers , which have the ability to turn any injured body part into a weapon . The no.1 engineer hunter , a samurai wielding assassin named Ruka , hunts them to uncover her father's killer. In future Tokyo, a young woman in the privatized police force tracks down her father's killer while battling against mutant rebels known as engineers. Two hours? This film is two hours long? Dark brooding tale of a world where self mutilation is the norm, where psychos have to be killed out right, and some mutants called engineers can re-sculpt their bodies in gruesome ways. Into the mix is a woman who's job is to go out and kill the engineers and who is looking for the man who killed her father.

One of the genre of gore films from Japan that exist purely to watch the blood and body parts fly. Its all over the top and many of these films work in a wonderfully disgusting sort of way. Most of the films I've seen tend to run under 90 minutes, do what they do and get off. They are amusing time killers for people who like things sprayed with fake blood.

As the gore films go this is one of the best looking and one of the dullest I've seen. The visuals of spraying blood and flying body parts are first rate. If you like this sort of thing odds are the visual compositions will make you smile, as will the cleverness, say the geisha girl who chops up subway molesters carrying an umbrella so as not to get covered in the red stuff. Equally good are some of the character designs which sometimes run toward the dark fetish (leather bound girl on all fours anyone?) The problem is that the films sense of story (okay yes I know the story isn't the point here) and pacing is way way off.The film just drones on, through terrible exposition scenes. yes the commercials are funny, but the story of the brooding heroine who saw her father die is really boring. Even more so when you consider that the girl never changes her expression. I was bored by the end of the first hour.

Far be it for me to suggest some one go at this film with a pair of shears and cut a half hour or more our of it, but in my humble opinion I think thats what this film needs. For me I'm glad I saw this on video where zapping to the next blood soaked sequence was easy.

Those loving ultra gory cleverness and a finger on the remote are directed to this film. Anyone else, especially those with an ounce of good taste, are directed elsewhere. If you can remember back to February 2009, I wrote a review of the Japanese splatter-comedy The Machine Girl. I stated at the end of that piece: "Yoshihiro Nishimura, costume designer and special effects technician, recently directed Tokyo Gore Police following his work on this film. I wonder how that movie will look. The Machine Girl is set in a suburb outside a large Japanese city. Part of the joke is imagining all the outlandish violence happening next door. His new film is set in an apocalyptic Tokyo, so he'll have to alter comedic conventions he learned on this project." I wasn't as talented a writer or as astute a film reviewer then, so expect this sequel to be, at least, readable. Fair warning, however, Tokyo Gore Police as you might guess given its title, contains many images audiences would find distasteful. I'm not going to censor myself entirely, so you may wish to skip this review. Yoshihiro Nishimura (effects artist from The Machine Girl) helmed Tokyo Gore Police designed the visuals, and even wrote the script. Unlike his previous projects, this film isn't a mere pun vehicle and is actually serious in tone.

The story serves as a parable of the privatization of Tokyo's police force, a distinctly non-Western fear. Hint: who do you think the antagonists will be? This decision was deemed necessary as monstrous former humans called "Engineers" were created by a mad scientist. These beings are living weapons that utilize self-immolation as their primary offense. Engineers generate new biological weapons whenever they are attacked and will not die unless a certain part of their body containing an "Engineer key" is removed. Mr. Nishimura doesn't simply attach rubber guns to school girls in this film. His Engineers grow creatively bizarre extremities, and his creations have no discernible influences. The craziness you will see in this film is actually quite original. Part of the fun is guessing what will come next, and when it does, how the Engineer will fight with it. The makeup and props involved in creating the weapons are well-integrated into the actors. There's a certain scene in which a female reveals her crocodile jaw lower body that is as lifelike as anything on Animal Planet. It looks as if he studied real animal movements and reproduced them. If any part of Mr. Nishimura's film is cheap looking, then it is the non-actor effects. Gun shots are clearly inserted flashes of light.

The jewel of the police force is a woman officer by the name of Ruka who fights with a masamune (I think). She is the best slayer on company who inadvertently becomes an Engineer after a chance encounter in a dark alley. Instead of going after other Engineers, she cleans up the crooked cops with her newly-acquired crustacean pincer and rocket launcher shoulder mount. Ruka is portrayed by Audition star Eihi Shiina and keeps a straight face the entire time, even when a cop-turned-Engineer launches human hand missiles with elongated middle fingers at her. She saves the picture from being another popcorn sci-fi flick and elevates it to a must-see. The humor created in her confrontation with cartoon-like Engineers is reminiscent of Buster Keaton's comedies. One favorable comparison I can make is Robocop. Tokyo Gore Police owes much to that film and, like its influence, is perverse but strangely entertaining.

Part three of this unofficial series of reviews will be Samurai Princess in which Mr. Nishimura was in charge of effects only. IMDb says is set sometime in the future but the artwork makes me feel like it should have been set in some fantasy-based past. Think of a really bloody version of Robin Hood: Men in Tights. That would be awesome! Now, the movie has to overcome my anticipation of the future as set by Tokyo Gore Police. I await it but not with the enthusiasm I had for the previous film. 646f9e108c
