A cop with a connection to the criminal underworld finds his secret life exposed when he and his partner are caught stealing cocaine from a powerful drug dealer, a move that puts his son's life in jeopardy.
A drug heist goes wrong, as one of the drug carriers escapes after stabbing the robbers, gets a glimpse of their faces. The two masked men are actually two police officers, who decided to plan the heist. Vincent, a lieutenant who now has a bad stab wound, ends up with a huge bag of coke. The bag of coke belongs to a powerful mob boss/nightclub owner named Jose, who kidnaps Vincent's son in hopes to reclaim his property. Vincent has until the end of the night to return the stash and save his son.
This is one of those pictures that picks you up, drags you along, wringing you out all the way and leaves you gasping at the end. Somewhere along the way there was a plot, I think, but it was so complicated that it was difficult to follow, what with all the action. The kitchen of the night-club takes a terrible drubbing and gets dripped with blood all over, about five men are brutally shot dead and one is finished off by being manually suffocated by, yes, the bad guy, whom we thought throughout was the good guy. But the pretty little female detective has seen through him as a result of messages on her (unbeknownst to her, stolen) cell-phone. She's shot, but yes she lives and just with one look of hers, you know that she will pursue him and testify against him and ruin his life and send him to prison for many, many years. It's a great picture and congratulations to the directer, who also wrote it. BTW, it's yet another low-budget picture of shatteringly high quality that makes Hollywood's $400 million budgets look absolutely ridiculous.
Wow, the French certainly know how to make their thrillers! Following from the excellent crime/suspense/thriller POINT BLANK comes SLEEPLESS NIGHT, a film whose major storyline takes place in a single nightclub in a single night. Into this setting are thrown a roguish hero, his partner, good cops, bad cops, gangsters, drug dealers, a kidnapped kid, henchmen, and a few hundred revellers. What could possibly go wrong?
Nothing, it transpires - at least in terms of film-making. Because, believe me, this is exciting, excellent stuff, up there with the best of the 'intense thriller' genre (which includes films such as THE MAN FROM NOWHERE, NO WAY OUT, the BOURNE trilogy, etc). There isn't a great deal of fighting - apart from one frenetic bust-up - but the editing is super-fast and the storyline never lets you go for a second. The amount of energy that's gone into this movie is spectacular indeed.
By the time the film ends you feel up as exhausted as the hero did, because this is tight, focused, compelling and however else you'd like to describe it. Great acting, great cinematography, a film made by people who know exactly what they're doing and how to deliver a knuckle-scraping, heart-pumping thrill-ride of a movie. I couldn't rate it more highly and I can't wait to see it again...and again...and again.
After a few turns in the modest narrative, an unlikely sense of structural resilience begins to emerge.
