A Beagle must use his newly-bestowed superpowers to defend Capitol City from mad scientist Simon Barsinister.
A bomb-sniffing beagle is fired from the mayor's office for a faux pas. That night a mad scientist dognaps him and injects him with an elixir. The dog escapes, but now has superpowers. He's adopted by a security guard - an ex-cop, who's a widower with a moody teen son, Jack. The boy discovers that the dog, named Shoeshine by dad, has super powers, but it's their little secret. While Underdog saves people in distress, the mad scientist and his underling continue their plot to catch him and take over the city. There's also a girl Jack likes who has a dog that Shoeshine takes a shine to. Will every dog have his day?
Jason Lee does well to give this doggy movie fleeting promise, but it's not enough to distinguish it from any other bland family comedy
This live-action, CG-enhanced adventure sees a shamed police dog (Jason Lee) transformed into a super-dog via an accident in the lab of scheming scientist Dr. Simon Barsinister (Peter Dinklage). Underdog sets about saving the city while attempting to keep his identity secret - a challenge given that he can both talk and fly.
The odd gag raises a smile, but Underdog's human sidekicks (James Belushi and Alex Neuberger as father and son) are as dull as the predictable storyline. One for kids too young to have seen Superman. Or Spider-Man. Or even Shaggy Dog
I feel I should mention that I have never seen an episode of the animated "Underdog" TV show, though I did have an Underdog comic and board game while growing up. Anyway, after seeing this live action adaptation, I have no desire to see the animated show, which should tell you how bad this movie is. It is terribly scripted, for one thing. Take James Belushi's character, for instance. He's supposed to be an ex-cop having problems raising his son, but the movie hardly does anything to explore or exploit these facts. In fact, I don't think he needs to be in the movie at all! The other characters in the movie are equally weakly written, coming across as stock characters at best. But the biggest problem is with depicting the title character. Maybe in hand-drawn animation, the idea of a dog superhero could work. But seeing a live action dog zooming through the skies just looks stupid and downright weird. It's possible kids under 5 years old might enjoy this movie - especially if they haven't seen that many better movies - but anyone older will feel their intelligence is being insulted.
The movie isn't nearly as bad as you would expect when the studio holds its only press screening the night before a national opening.
