A giant alien spider escapes from a military lab and rampage the city of Los Angeles. When a massive military strike fails, it is up to a team of scientists and one clever exterminator to kill the creature before the city is destroyed. The title gives you all you need to know about this low budget comedy sci-fi horror. If you are looking for anything other than B movie awesomeness then go elsewhere. If you have 80 minutes to kill and want to watch something entertaining, untaxing and a lot of fun then Big Ass Spider is where you need to be. Greg Grunberg leads the cast as Alex, a pest exterminator who becomes embroiled in the incredible events that consume Los Angeles in the course of 12 hours. The movie was cast from the director's Facebook friends list and there are a lot worse ways to cast a movie. Everyone involved looks to be having a lot of fun and this cannot help but be passed on to the audience. Mike Mendez, who directed the movie fought against distributors who wanted to name it Dino Spider or Mega Spider. Far too serious a title for this great little movie. As Mendez himself maintained, Big Ass Spider "is the right title for the movie. I felt it in my heart and soul." He was right. My wife and I watched this movie Big Ass Spider last night Directed by Mike Mendez and written by Gregory Gieras. It had a great cast including Ray Wise, Greg Grunberg, Lin Shaye, Patrick Bauchau, Clare Kramer and many more. This movie was well written, well directed and great effects. We love spider movies and some we have seen was rather shoddy and looked like it was done with a home video camera. This movie is different. This one was very well filmed. We laughed all the way through this movie. I am looking forward to any other films Mike has done. I have seen a couple of his films in the past, The Covent and Gravedancers an both was great. This movie and the other two i have mentioned and saw is indeed a great addition to your video library Big Ass Spider, lazily directed by Mike Mendez and unwisely written without a trace of necessary camp by Gregory Gieras, aims for satire and settles for stale shtick. It ends with the song “La Cucaracha,” leaving the door open for more insects to come. Cockroaches, anyone? This film is about a female mother spider (I believe it is a black widow species spider) that grows and grows.
