Something has destroyed Birth Island, home of Godzilla and Little Godzilla and soon, it is discovered that Godzilla has developed a bright flaming glow, indicating that his nuclear energy is growing out of control. Fearing that Godzilla will soon explode, the G-Force tries to freeze him, thus cooling his temperature. But another problem arises as a horde of human sized creatures, formed from a combination of Godzilla cells, and the weapon that destroyed the original one, The Oxygen Destroyer. Now the military must try to stop these creatures and stop Godzilla from going through a nuclear meltdown that could destroy the world. The aftermath of the Oxygen Destroyer brings forth Destoroyah, a beast intent on killing Godzilla, who is on the verge of a nuclear meltdown. This is one of the most important Godzilla films because well, it actually features the death of Godzilla. This isn't quite as much of a shock as you would expect because it's only the Godzilla that appeared in the second series of films as the originals (save the 1954 film) are not considered canon here. What's fascinating is that I always thought it was Destoroyah that offed Godzilla. I mean, his name is in the title! Instead, it was actually the Japanese military that put a stop to him. Only at the very end do we see Godzilla Jr. who will become the next Godzilla.

We get to see all three Godzillas in this movie, including the original in flashbacks. The 1954 one was the first and stayed dead. A pity the rest of the series didn't have him around to appear as he was ranked as the best of all in his only appearance. We get great allusions to the original film and even black and white footage. My only complaint is that the smaller Destroyahs do look kind of fake. As far as people in rubber suits go, this was very intense and very well done. *** Because of some recent geological events, which also resulted in an island disappearing, Godzilla's (Kenpachiro Satsuma) "radioactive heart" is out of whack, and a nuclear meltdown is threatening--Godzilla could explode, and that would mean that all of life on the Earth would be wiped out, at least according to the computer simulation. Still, the military thinks it's a good idea to attack Godzilla and risk destroying the world, because otherwise Godzilla might ruin a few more blocks of downtown Tokyo. So they employ a number of tactics, including something about micro-oxygen which either infuses things with oxygen or depletes them of oxygen, depending on which page of the script rewrite we're on, some kind of freezing rays, mostly shot from a space-age experimental jet, and a gaggle of alternate monsters that can join together and become a super-monster named Destoroyah, and which shoots out micro-oxygen rays, freezing rays, or, well, something.

My account of the premise on this one should give you a good idea of how confusing the plot is this time around. Out of all of the Toho Godzilla films I've seen so far, and that's nowhere near the majority of them yet, this is the worst. On the other hand, it also has high entertainment value for being so bad. It's guaranteed to keep you laughing as you try to make any sense out of the plot. Thus, Godzilla earns my valuable 5 out of 10 rating, which is solely reserved for films that are "so bad they're good" (which is subtly different from films that are, let's say, very "different" than most standards of film-making and evaluation, but that are good despite their weirdness/ridiculousness, which is a large percentage of the Godzilla films).

Part of the problem is that the plot is very complicated. Most of it hinges on pseudo-scientific gobbledy-gook, and it's not very consistent with itself. Kazuki Omori's script is like an ever-shifting game of Clue. The weapons bounce back and forth between micro-oxygen, freezing rays and Destoroyah (a name that seems to be used both for monsters and a deadly scientific device), the perpetrators bounce back and forth between scientists, various factions of the military and monsters, and the locations bounce back and forth between various Tokyo locales and the ocean. It gets very confusing trying to figure out what's going on--is it the scientists with the freezing rays in the ocean, or the monsters with the micro-oxygen downtown, or the military with the freezing rays at the airport? I suppose I could have kept hitting pause and tried graphing the plot, but that seemed like too much work for watching a Godzilla film. Instead, my attention turned to how ridiculous and funny everything was, and I was extremely entertained.

Like many Godzilla films, the big brawl at the climax of the film mostly consisted of relatively random special effects, which are supposed to be the monsters shooting out rays of stuff from their mouths, eyes, armpits, etc. It's not usually clear what any of the special effects are supposed to do, because there is little consistency in the reactions of the monsters to the different special effects, and they take turns acting like they're hurt and then getting back up as if nothing had happened--something like "professional wrestling".

However, this film is notorious for supposedly being the end of Godzilla, or at least this nth instantiation of Godzilla, and the "nuclear meltdown" scene has some pretty nifty effects.

If you can enjoy it for its absurdity, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah is worth a watch. Everyone else should avoid. Yes. The alternate ending consisted of footage not seen by many other than in Japan but it does contain a few shots from Godzilla's death as seen in the final cut. Godzilla still dies, but in the alternate ending Destroyer actually gets up after being shot down by the JSDF and the Super-X III, but is badly wounded and unable to fight. Godzilla in his rage grabs him by the horn and continues to pummel him with his free fist. While doing so he finally reaches the meltdown temperature of 1200 and the army rains freezer weapons on both of them. Destroyer ,due to being so close to Godzilla during his meltdown and the extreme cold created by the Super X III, dies right before Godzilla does as well. In the end, Junior still is revived so in essence it's more or less the same, but director Takao Owara decided to give the Monster King his much needed center stage as he died, and so new shots were added and Destroyah dies long before so. The Sony Tristar DVD contains no special features, what so ever, but the Toho DVD-r copy (which is available on Amazon) has this ending along with plenty of other features. Yes, in fact there are three. keep in note these scenes can not be seen on the internet anywhere (as far as I have searched) or on the Sony Tristar DVD release of the film. In order to see them you must buy the actual Toho DVD, available on Amazon.com and monsterislandtoys.com.

(1) One has Junior entering Tokyo in the same style as he did in the final cut, along with the flying form of Destroyer ramming him, but it is shot from entirely different angles.

(2) The second is the highly talked about scene where Destroyer's chest opens up and fires an enormous blast at Godzilla, knocking him into a building and hurting him badly. Godzilla however recovers and counters with his breath weapon. While as the scene is pretty much complete, with sound effects and everything, it was apparently too early in production to add either Godzilla or Destroyer's beam weapons into the shots.

(3) The alternate ending, which you can read further about above... Yes, kind of. Unlike most movies that have an black backdrop during the credits, the Heisei Godzilla films had special footage that played during the credits. And because this was (at the time) to be Godzilla's final film, there are scenes from all seven Heisei Godzilla films, along with scenes from the original 1954 film "Gojira", inorder to commemorate the Monster king's death. 646f9e108c
