I really struggled to watch this movie from start to finish as it was nothing more than cliché dancing over clichés and, matched only with the continuous bad hammy acting.
Might be great for the kids or 1, but I doubt it as I'm convinced they have at least a modicum of sophistication.
The concept, brilliant. I cannot not fault, the acting and choreography I can.
If I could get away with returning my DVD and claim my refund I would. Its that dire. I only paid £7.00 and even that was way to much.
I would like to say it belongs within the B movie rank and file, but alas, its not even that good.
There... I think I've given a clear picture of not liking the movie!
I read all the mixed reviews, saw the trailer, decided to check out the film and give my own critique of the film. My first pet peeve is reading people saying they only watched 20 minutes of the film and then they decide to do a review. To me, they lose the right to be reviewing it then. Those giving the film ratings of 1s and 10s are not being completely honest as I've seen worse and better which makes me feel there is clearly a lot of biased opinions both ways. Those giving 1s must have some kind of bone to pick or have simply not watched enough movies. Those giving 10s are probably cast members.
I will admit I enjoyed watching the film to a certain extent with all the action scenes and all action. There are, however, two large flaws to it. The first is that the acting is horrendous. Jacob is played by Jordan Matthews and he appears to lack any acting talent. My girlfriend and I could not stop laughing at the way he delivered some of his lines, actually most of them. But it doesn't stop there. Sarah is played by Hallee Hirsh and is very whiny in this film. Her acting doesn't seem to kick in until the final act where she has to beat her mom to death with a metal pole. It's almost like they didn't even try. The only saving graces are actors Brad Dourif and Thomas Ian Nicholas, who seem to be the most seasoned actors in the film. I would have rated this film way higher if not for the acting. The second thing was the action started almost too fast. I am a huge lover of action films but the problem is, we never get to go on that ride with them in the same way because we don't seem to care about the characters as much.
Now that the bad stuff is out of the way, I think the story is quite interesting, although it leaves just as many questions as it answers. I LOVED the ending, which I found to be quite shocking as we see Jacob turn bad and go ballistic on Matteus as he seems to become him. It ends in not the typical vain as one would expect which I quite enjoyed, and it seems most studios would prefer a more cheery ending.
I also thought the story of Michael was actually more fascinating than the story of Jacob, again probably due to the acting. I also thought how the two stories from the past and present come together worked out nicely although I still am not completely clear what the deal with Jacob is. He appears to be some sort of spell raised about by Nicholas's character and sent to protect his niece, Sarah. The rest can go to hell it seems until Jacob is asked to go protect younger sister Jill.
There are things I would have changed like distinguishing the past and present more and the better actors but the film is not bad for entertainment purposes, especially if you can get past the bad acting. Visually, I thought it was really nicely done and I thought the story was a grade better than a typical slasher. I would have given it a 5 but because its an independent low-budget B-film, I'll give it a 5 1/2 (which I did round to 6). I can only imagine what this film could have been with a larger budget and better cast like Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jacob, Emma Roberts as Sarah and Michael Fassbender playing Matteus.
"How are we going to get out of here?" Sarah squawks at one point, a question that Mr. Dourif ought to have asked his agent long before the cameras began to roll.
