After copper miners discover part of the frozen tail of a prehistoric monster in Lapland, scientists inadvertently bring it back to life. Copper miners in the tundras of Lapland discover a frozen piece of reptilian tail belonging to some unknown prehistoric creature. Taking the specimen to an aquarium in Copenhagen, Professor Martens (Asbjorn Andersen) gets more than he bargained for when the tail regenerates into a giant, acid spitting monster that terrorizes the country. The Danish military, led by U.N.-appointed American general Mark Grayson (Carl Ottosen) attempts to hunt down the monster and destroy it, only to realize that blowing the thing up will create hundreds of little creatures. I first saw this movie around 1966, and again in 2004. Quite frankly I put it on the same par with others of it's time. Didn't know till I read the comments there were scenes where it could fly. At any rate just wanted to say yeah its got its flaws...but....remember when it was made.....special effects then WERE using a puppet and making it look like a Giant! Personally I think it is a good monster movie all things considered. Any movies made around this time seem laughable by todays standards. I've seen lots of them and never thought about the acting or anything else-just follow the plot, and as plots come and go its OK I think. Looking at this movie and THE GIANT CLAW you have to wonder if the producers thought ANYONE would be frightened by such outrageous monsters? I mean THE GIANT CLAW looks like a pinata from Hell and Reptilicus is so obviously a string puppet. Well, people are still watching these movies some 40 years later so there has to be something about them that people find attractive. Personally I love REPTILICUS and now knowing many of the behind the scenes stories only enhances my admiration for this picture. Imagine they cut the scenes of the monster flying because they were . . .get ready . ..unconvincing! Considering the scenes that made it into the release print the flying scenes must have been a real hoot! My favourite scene is the one on the drawbridge. Those people falling into the river are not stunt artists, they are a real Danish biking club who agreed to ride their bikes off the bridge in exchange for a hefty donation from Sidney Pink! Also the hasty post-production dubbing is great. Listen for the voice of Robert Cornthwaite (THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, WAR OF THE WORLDS, etc) as the Professor. Still everyone sounds like they are speaking English phonetically! Bizarre yes, but also lots of fun. I just hope they don't do a high-tech remake.
